A "Master of Wine" is a wine professional who has passed the world's most difficult wine examination. Currently, there are 415 people in the world who hold the Master of Wine qualification (as of 2022).
The only Japanese person living in Japan who holds this qualification is Kenichi Ohashi .
To pass the Master of Wine (MW) exam, applicants must first obtain a degree from the Wine & Spirits Education Trust (WSET), the premier wine school based in London. Because these are very difficult, many candidates take years to obtain the degree.
To obtain the degree, students must study six specialized wine subjects, pass a written exam and a blind tasting test, etc. In addition to a degree, applicants to the MW program must also have experience in the wine industry.
Many people take more than 10 years to obtain the MW title, and MWs have a wealth of wine knowledge and experience.
