The Wairau Valley is one of three sub-regions of Marlborough, which produces more than 70% of New Zealand's wine grapes, and is the northernmost area (the other two are Awatere Valley and Southern Valley). It is not registered as a GI.
This area has a relatively warm climate, with a long, narrow valley bottom along the Wairau River, which runs east to west through the valley, and the soil is mainly alluvial.
Wines made from Wairau Valley Sauvignon Blanc have aromas of ripe citrus and tropical fruits.
