A sub-region that is a further division of a region, which is a wine-producing area, region, or district. Examples: Wairau Valley in Marlborough, Gibbston in Central Otago, Martinborough in Wairarapa, etc.
Even within the same region, different sub-regions have different soils and climates, which can result in distinct differences in the flavor of the wines produced.
