The Médoc is a famous wine-producing region located on the left bank of the Gironde River, which runs through the center of Bordeaux.
The wines from this region are primarily made up of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot also blended into the mix.
Wineries in the Médoc region are classified by the Médoc Classified Châteaux, the world's most famous wine classification.
Among these Médoc-classified chateaux, the chateaux selected as first growths are called the "Five Great Chateaus." However, one of them, Haut-Brion, is an exception, as it is not located in the Médoc region, but in the Graves region upstream of the river.
There are five grades, from first to fifth growth, and the classification has remained almost unchanged since it was created in 1855.
