The Beaujolais region is a vast wine-producing region located at the southernmost tip of Burgundy. (※It is also called "Beaujolais", and "Beaujolais" is sometimes used when writing in katakana.)
This region is a hilly area with a granite base, which is suitable for growing the red wine grape variety "Gamay". Therefore, most of the wine produced is red wine using Gamay.
Beaujolais Nouveau, which is released every year on the third Thursday of November, is world-famous, but it is especially popular in Japan, with roughly half of all Beaujolais Nouveau exported heading for Japan.
While this region's wines tend to attract attention as "Nouveau," it is also well-known for its high-quality, long-aged wines.
In particular, the 10 regions known as the "Cru du Beaujolais" are known as the producers of complex, deep, Gamay wines.
