クラウディー ベイは、NZワインを語る上で欠かせないワイナリーです。LVMH(モエ・ヘネシー・ルイ・ヴィトン)グループの一員ということもあり、世界で最も名の知れたNZのワイナリーのひとつと言えるでしょう。

先日、僕はこのクラウディー ベイのセミナー「マスタークラス」を受講する機会があり、クラウディー ベイのテクニカル ディレクターであるジムホワイトさんから直接色々な話を聞かせて頂きました。

この記事では、そんな情報も織り混ぜつつクラウディー ベイの紹介をして行きたいと思います。

What's Cloudy Bay like?

Cloudy Bay's signature Sauvignon Blanc has a refreshing and fresh aroma and flavor, with fruit flavors such as grapefruit and passion fruit, and a flavor reminiscent of cut grass. It is loved around the world as a white wine with a unique personality that cannot be found in other countries.

In addition, the unique cuvée "Tecoco," made with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc, and the full-bodied Pinot Noir "Te Wahi" are also loved around the world.

この“クラウディー ベイ”という名前は、マールボロ地方の東側にある大きな湾「クラウディ湾」からつけられているんですよ。

クラウディー ベイの歴史

クラウディー ベイは、マールボロにおけるワインづくりの初期(1980年代)に設立されたワイナリーの一つであり、現在ではNZのワイン産業を牽引する存在ですが、実はその誕生のきっかけは、隣国オーストラリアにあります。

当時のオーナーで醸造責任者だったホーネン氏は、そのワインの中でも特にソーヴィニヨン・ブランに衝撃を受けます。そして、このワインが持つ素晴らしいポテンシャルを見抜き、すぐさまマールボロへの進出を決断しました。

彼の予想は的中し、1985年に「クラウディー ベイ」名義でリリースしたソーヴィニヨン・ブランは、いきなりイギリス市場で高い評価を得ます。この成功を受け、同年8月、正式にワイナリーを設立したのでした。ワインの世界において、イギリスでの評価はとても重要で、大きな影響力があると言えるのです。

 

クラウディー ベイを知ったのは十数年前のこと。

僕がNZワインに夢中になったきっかけは、「グレイワッキ」のソーヴィニヨン・ブランとの出会いでした。

なんて素敵なワインなんだ!と思い、そこから一気にNZワインにのめり込んだのですが、そのグレイワッキのオーナーのケヴィン・ジュッド氏が、実は長年クラウディー ベイの醸造責任者を務めていたという経歴があり、そこでクラウディー ベイのことを知ったのです。

1990年には、シャンパーニュの大手「ヴーヴ・クリコ」とパートナーシップを結び、一気に国際的な市場へ進出。現在は、「LVMH モエ・ヘネシー・ルイ・ヴィトン」傘下のブランドとなっています。

すでに、マールボロ地方は「ぶどうに適した土地はほとんど残っていない」と言われるほど開墾が進んでいますが、この土地に早く目をつけたクラウディー ベイは、ぶどう栽培に適した土地を1980年代から取得している為、大きなアドバンテージがあります。

そして、マールボロの土地に根ざし、長年にわたって培ってきた栽培や醸造の技術は非常に高く、毎年安定した品質のワインを生み出しています。現在、クラウディー ベイのワインは、その品質の高さと安定した供給量を生かし、世界60カ国以上に輸出されています。また、各国の主要都市のレストランでも提供されている為、世界での知名度の高さはNZワインの中でもトップクラスです。

 

特にイギリスやアメリカ、オーストラリア、アジアのワインショップやレストランでは、定番の銘柄になっています。今や、クラウディー ベイは「NZの顔」と言えると思います。

ここからは、日本でリリースされている6種類のワインの特徴をみていきましょう。

Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc

Cloudy Bay has made New Zealand wine popular around the world. This Sauvignon Blanc created the basis of the New Zealand style.

The aroma and flavor of this year's vintage are unique to a top winery. It features crisp acidity, grapefruit and passion fruit flavors, and a fresh herbal taste, firmly expressing the style of Marlborough, New Zealand's leading wine-producing region.

It goes extremely well with carpaccio, green salads, white fish meunière, fried chicken, etc.

Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir

This Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir, a Marlborough representative, stood out as having a particularly strong fruity flavor.

It has the sweetness of soft American cherries, raspberries, and plums, and the strength of the fruit can be felt in the long-lasting aftertaste on the finish.

It has a mild astringency and a fruity flavor, so it is recommended for those who are not accustomed to drinking red wine or those drinking wine for the first time.

It's delicious to drink now, but I think it will have a more refined flavor in about five years.

Cloudy Bay Chardonnay

Cloudy Bay is the brand that has contributed the most to spreading New Zealand wine around the world. Their Chardonnay is also of a high level, with a good balance of fruit and oak elements. The aftertaste is also long.

It goes well with creamy dishes such as salmon or chicken in cream sauce, and also goes well with cheese-filled pizza.

According to Cloudy Bay's information, it will last for 10 years, but it's still delicious even if you open it now.

Cloudy Bay Perolus NV

Cloudy Bay, the prestigious winery that has made New Zealand wine famous around the world, produces this sparkling wine using the Champagne method. It is aged in the bottle for two years. The taste is fruity, typical of New Zealand wines.

They can accommodate a wide range of tastes, including Japanese, Western, Chinese, and ethnic. It's also delicious with fresh fruits such as mangoes and pineapples!

It is also recommended for those who usually drink champagne but would like to try a different sparkling wine for once .

Cloudy Bay Tecoco

One of the themes of this Tecoco is "finishing Sauvignon Blanc in a Chardonnay style." In brewing, they use barrels to ferment with wild yeast and incorporate malolactic fermentation, which is not usually done with Sauvignon Blanc.

This gives it a milder acidity and a smoother mouthfeel. It is also characterized by being aged on the lees for 11 months.

A hearty white wine goes well with strongly seasoned chicken or pork, and Japanese food such as oyster miso hotpot would also go well with it.

Cloudy Bay Te Wahi

Te Wahi is a well-balanced blend of grapes from two vineyards with different characteristics. One is Calvert, which has silty soil. The grapes harvested here are characterized by fine tannins and delicate, soft aromas. The other is Northburn, which has loamy soil. Here, grapes with powerful, firm structure are harvested. Of course, all the grapes are hand-picked.

The flavor of Te Wahi is richer than that of Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir, which is made using grapes from Marlborough, and is dominated by black fruits such as blackberries, dark berries, and American cherries. It also has a strong spice flavor, with star anise and cloves.
