This unique white wine from Cloudy Bay, the renowned winery that has made New Zealand wine famous around the world, takes Sauvignon Blanc to the next level with its layered flavors.
This wine has a complex flavor and pairs well with fish and chicken dishes seasoned with butter. It also pairs well with Chinese and ethnic cuisine.
Layers of deliciousness
Tecoco is a premium Sauvignon Blanc cuvée that has received high praise internationally, including a score of 98 from the British wine magazine Decanter.
This wine was born from the spirit of challenge that Kevin Judd, current owner of Greywacke, had when he was head winemaker at Cloudy Bay: "I want to make a more interesting wine."
One of the themes of Tecoco is "making Sauvignon Blanc taste like Chardonnay." In brewing, they use barrels to ferment with wild yeast and incorporate malolactic fermentation, which is not usually done with Sauvignon Blanc.
This results in a milder acidity and a smoother mouthfeel. Another feature is that it is aged on the lees for 11 months.
When it was first released in 2000, it had such a similar aroma and flavor to Chardonnay that people who tried it mistook it for Chardonnay. However, after that, adjustments were made, such as changing the proportion of malolactic fermentation, and it evolved into a modern style that is mellow yet has a pronounced acidity.
The grapes used are also carefully selected, with no compromises made, and in 2017 and 2018, production was not carried out as it was deemed difficult to harvest the required amount of grapes to meet the standards.
The aroma is reminiscent of subtropical fruits such as lemon, citrus fruits, and mango, as well as herbs such as jasmine and lemongrass, with a hint of ginger.
The taste is complex and concentrated, allowing you to drink it slowly over time and making it suitable for aging for many years.
Recommended pairings
This is the perfect wine for those who have had some experience with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
I'm sure you'll be surprised to find out that Sauvignon Blanc exists like this!
To pair with "Tecoco," we recommend dishes with a rich, full-bodied flavor, such as fish, chicken, or pork sautéed in butter.
About the Cloudy Bay Winery
Cloudy Bay was founded in 1985 by David Hohnen, the founder of the Australian winery Cape Mentelle. It is one of the earliest wineries to establish itself in the Marlborough region, known as New Zealand's largest wine-producing region.
Cloudy Bay's Sauvignon Blanc was one of a kind at the time, combining the aromas of passion fruit and tropical fruits with the aromas of herbs and grasses.
Its lively style, which makes the most of the characteristics of the Marlborough region, is very unique and has been called "the wine that woke the world up to white wine," and it is highly regarded as a wine that has raised the global status of New Zealand wine.
Currently under the umbrella of Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the company continues to produce high-quality wines and contributes to the development of New Zealand wine.
By the way, Cloudy Bay's name quickly spread around the world after it formed a partnership with the famous champagne maker, Veuve Clicquot.
About Marlborough
Marlborough is the heart of New Zealand's wine region.
Marlborough has ideal natural conditions for grape growing, such as abundant sunshine and large temperature differences throughout the day, and produces over 80% of New Zealand's wine.
Among them, Sauvignon Blanc, characterized by its crisp acidity and overflowing fruitiness, boasts an overwhelming production volume and is loved worldwide for its unique character. In red wine, Pinot Noir, with its rich berry fruit flavor, is also popular.
