When it comes to wine, many people may have the image that it is difficult and hard to understand, but New Zealand wines tend to be fresh, fruity, and have familiar aromas and flavors, so they are recommended even for wine beginners.

In this article, Iwasu, a sommelier specializing in New Zealand wines, will introduce 11 particularly recommended white wines from New Zealand's attractive wine scene, divided into three price ranges.

Whether you're a wine beginner or a fan of New Zealand wine, we hope you'll find a bottle you like!

Characteristics of New Zealand wine

Before introducing our recommended wines, let us first briefly explain the characteristics of New Zealand wines.

In New Zealand, which can be described as a "country full of white wine," more than 85% of the wine produced is white wine . Furthermore, the overwhelming majority of the white wine is the Sauvignon Blanc variety.

Sauvignon Blanc

The history of New Zealand wine

While winemaking in traditional wine-producing countries such as France began before the Common Era, winemaking in New Zealand has only really taken off in the last 40 years or so.

In 1985, the winery Cloudy Bay released a Sauvignon Blanc that was highly praised around the world, which triggered the rapid expansion of the New Zealand wine market. Today, Sauvignon Blanc has become synonymous with New Zealand wine.

Taking advantage of the advantage of being a latecomer to the wine industry, New Zealand has grown rapidly through rational winemaking and promotion methods. In addition, its environmentally friendly and sustainable grape cultivation and brewing methods have become a model case for winemaking as an action to create a sustainable society.

Wine Region

When you think of New Zealand wine, you think of "Marlborough." Most of the New Zealand wine sold in Japan is also from Marlborough.

Marlborough

A huge wine-producing region that produces over 80% of New Zealand's wine. Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in particular is characterized by its bursting fruit flavors, such as passion fruit and citrus fruits.

There are many other unique production areas. Please take a look at the production area introduction pages below.

Popular White Wine Grape Varieties

Sauvignon Blanc accounts for the overwhelming majority of the market share, and other varieties are still not widely available in stores in Japan. If you are looking for a New Zealand white wine other than Sauvignon Blanc, we recommend purchasing it from an online shopping site.

Sauvignon Blanc

A grape variety that represents New Zealand wine. In addition to the refreshing aroma of herbs and green grass, you can enjoy the familiar fruity aroma and flavor of citrus fruits and passion fruit.

Pinot Gris

Among white wines, Pinot Gris is the second most popular variety in New Zealand after Sauvignon Blanc. In the near future, there is a possibility that Pinot Gris will become a famous New Zealand wine.

Chardonnay

Although production in New Zealand is not that high, they do produce high quality Chardonnay. The predominant style is one that combines fruit aromas with vanilla aromas from the oak barrels.

Gewürztraminer

It is a variety with a unique flavor that has earned it a loyal following. In the North Island, it tends to have a tropical flavor, while in the South Island, it tends to have a sour flavor.

The appeal of NZ wine is its freshness, so it is generally recommended to choose wine from the latest vintage (the year the grapes were harvested). In particular, if you choose the latest vintage of Sauvignon Blanc, you will likely notice a strong grapefruit-like aroma (although there are some that do not).

Now, let's move on to introducing some recommended white wines. First, we'll start with wines under 2,500 yen.
