Black Estate is a family-owned winery located in the North Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It is located about an hour's drive from Christchurch, surrounded by beautiful vineyard landscapes.

Natural grape cultivation that respects the land

The most distinctive feature of this winery is its thorough commitment to methods that maximize the power of nature, such as organic and biodynamic farming. We don't use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Instead, we care for our fields as a living organism, letting our own cows and neighboring sheep graze on them to eat weeds and using their manure as natural fertilizer. Furthermore, one of their particular points of focus is to carry out farming work in accordance with the rhythms of celestial bodies, such as the phases of the moon. .

Three unique vineyards

Black Estate has three vineyards, each with its own distinct character. .

• Home : This is the winery's base, where robust grapes are grown in clay soil. .

• Damsteep : As the name suggests, it is located on a steep slope, and the limestone-rich soil gives the wine a unique flavor. .

• Netherwood : This is the oldest vineyard, established in 1986. Without artificial watering, the vines are allowed to naturally develop deep roots, resulting in a concentrated flavor. .

"Doing nothing" winemaking

Nicholas Brown, the head winemaker, is a highly skilled individual who was named New Zealand's best winemaker in 2022. His philosophy is "to intervene as little as possible." He doesn't use artificial yeast, fermenting only with natural yeasts found in the vineyard. Furthermore, he doesn't filter the wine to make it clear, so the pure, energetic flavor of the grapes is bottled as is. .
