Pinot Gris: A Concentrated, Dry Pinot Gris

About an hour's drive from Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island lies the Waipara Valley. Despite being a relatively small wine region, it is home to a cluster of unique wineries—including Black Estate, which is committed to organic and biodynamic farming practices.
This "Skypunch" is a name that has been added relatively recently to the Black Estate lineup.
The site is located on a slope just next to the "Home" block, along Blacks Avenue, where the winery is based.
Originally a vineyard tended by neighbors Julian and Connor, it was leased by Black Estate and is now managed by their own team. Currently, the vineyard is in conversion to obtain organic certification (BioGro). The soil is primarily clay.
Winemaking
Black Estate's winemaking approach is, above all, to "not interfere too much." Fermentation is carried out solely using wild yeasts native to the vineyard.
Like their other wines, this Skypunch Pinot Gris is bottled unfined and unfiltered, capturing the individuality of the grapes and the land perfectly in the bottle.
Tasting Notes
The color is a slightly deep greenish-yellow. The aroma is a bit more restrained than the typical New Zealand style. There is a faint, yogurt-like note derived from fermentation at first, followed by scents of peach and dried flowers.
On the palate, you can clearly feel the concentration of the fruit. Flavors of white peach and quince spread out, with hints of cardamom emerging from beneath. The finish shows a fleeting bitterness, reminiscent of grapefruit pith. The finish is long, accompanied by a mineral quality.
As the wine warms up, nuances of tropical fruits like mango emerge significantly. This is a wine that rewards taking your time as the temperature shifts.
Pairing Suggestions
It pairs exceptionally well with seafood and chicken dishes. We recommend pairing it with salt-based dishes that highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients.
- Pan-seared scallops: The umami of the shellfish and the salinity of the wine enhance each other.
- White fish and herb carpaccio: The crisp, dry mouthfeel complements the delicate flavor of the fish.
- Chicken tempura (with salt): The savory character of the fried food layers pleasantly with the wine's fruitiness.
- Salt-koji roasted chicken: Roasted chicken with umami paired with an umami-rich Pinot Gris is a foolproof combination.
While Black Estate is strongly associated with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this newcomer Pinot Gris is a bottle that makes the winery's appeal feel much more accessible. It is also highly recommended as an introduction to Black Estate!
About the "Black Estate" Winery

Black Estate is a family-run winery located in the North Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. Situated about an hour's drive from Christchurch, it features expansive and beautiful vineyard landscapes.
"Natural" viticulture that respects the land
The winery's greatest characteristic is its thorough commitment to organic and biodynamic farming methods, which maximize the power of nature. They do not use synthetic fertilizers or pesticides at all. Instead, they treat the vineyard as a living organism, for example, by letting their own cattle and neighboring sheep graze on weeds to provide natural fertilizer through their manure. Aligning farm work with celestial rhythms, such as the phases of the moon, is another one of their hallmarks.
Three unique vineyards
Black Estate consists of three distinct vineyards, each with its own personality.
-
Home: The heart of the winery, where powerful grapes are grown in clay-rich soil.
-
Damsteep: True to its name, this site is situated on a steep slope, and the limestone-laden soil imparts a unique flavor to the wine.
-
Netherwood: The oldest vineyard, established in 1986. By eschewing artificial irrigation, the vines are forced to extend their roots deep into the earth, resulting in a concentrated flavor.
"Hands-off" Winemaking

Winemaker Nicholas Brown is a highly accomplished professional who was named New Zealand Winemaker of the Year in 2022. His philosophy is "to intervene as little as possible." He avoids artificial yeasts, relying solely on those naturally present in the vineyard for fermentation. Furthermore, because the wine is not filtered or fined, it is bottled with the pure, energetic flavors inherent to the grapes.
The joy of visiting the winery
On the premises, there is a famous restaurant that consistently receives the highest "two-star" rating from prestigious local guides. Here, you can enjoy dishes made with fresh organic ingredients sourced from their own gardens and local farms, paired with their proud wines. They also offer a B&B where you can stay in the middle of the vineyard, providing a special experience where you can have the quiet night in the vines all to yourself once the staff has gone home.
Black Estate is more than just a place where wine is made; it is a passionate winery that offers a complete experience of the land's nature and food culture.
