Soft, Delicate, Beautiful Pinot

About 50 minutes by car from Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island. Black Estate's "Home vineyard" spread across the hills of Waipara Valley is where founder Russell Black first started, truly their origin.

Incidentally, Russell Black has since retired, and the current winemaker is Nicholas Brown. It's funny because Brown makes Black! LOL

Now, this Home vineyard, managed by Brown, is a gentle north-facing slope. The soil is clay-rich with limestone. This well-drained, mineral-rich land nurtures supple and aromatic Pinot Noir.

The vineyard consists of two blocks: the bottom block with vines over 30 years old, and the top block with vines around 15 years old but planted at high density. Neither is irrigated, and all vines are on their own roots. Under BioGro certified organic and Demeter certified biodynamic farming, the grapes quietly build up their strength.

Winemaking

No additives such as chaptalization or acidification are used. Fermentation is carried out only with wild yeasts, and bottling is done without fining or filtration. Only a minimal amount of SO2 is added at bottling.

"To bottle exactly what the land possesses." Black Estate's winemaking philosophy is most directly expressed in this wine, Home.

Tasting Notes

The color is a slightly bright ruby red. It appears to have a slight haze.

The aroma is dominated by vibrant red fruit notes such as raspberry, American cherry, and pomegranate. These are layered with nuances of dried herbs, creating delicate and complex aromatic layers.

On the palate, it is soft and supple. The tannins are fine-grained and not overpowering. Yet, the lingering finish that gradually spreads after swallowing has a definite presence.

This is a wine for which "beauty" rather than "heaviness," and "delicacy" rather than "power," are fitting descriptors.

Aging

Its charm is fully conveyed even when opened now. However, after 3-5 years of aging, the fruit, acidity, and tannins will become more integrated, transforming into an even smoother and more complex flavor.

It is also recommended to age it for a special occasion.

Pairing Suggestions

The vibrant fruit aromas and delicate tannins complement a wide range of dishes, such as roasted chicken or pork, mushroom risotto, or grilled tuna.

Its versatility, not being picky about food, is one of this wine's charms.

  • Herb-roasted chicken thigh: The vibrant fruit aroma and herbal notes harmonize naturally.
  • Pan-fried pork fillet: The delicate tannins gently envelop the tender umami of the pork.
  • Mushroom risotto: The earthy notes of mushrooms resonate with the aroma of dried herbs.
  • Tuna steak (soy sauce flavor): The umami of the red meat and the aroma of red fruits surprisingly pair very well.

Among Black Estate's Pinots, this Home is the most approachable, yet packed with the winery's philosophy.

By comparing it with the intensely powerful "Damsteep" and the extremely complex "Netherwood," you will be able to more deeply appreciate the individuality of each vineyard, all born from the same winemaker and philosophy.

About the Winery "Black Estate"

Black Estate is a family-owned winery located in the North Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. It is about an hour's drive from Christchurch and boasts beautiful vineyard landscapes.

"Natural" Viticulture that Cares for the Land

The most prominent feature of this winery is its strict adherence to organic and biodynamic farming methods, which maximize the power of nature. No chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used. Instead, they care for the vineyard as a living organism, for example, by grazing their own cows and neighborhood sheep in the fields to eat weeds, and using their manure as natural fertilizer. Another one of their commitments is to carry out farm work according to the rhythms of celestial bodies, such as the phases of the moon. .

Three Unique Vineyards

Black Estate has three vineyards, each with a distinct personality. .

  • Home: The winery's base, where robust grapes grow from clayey soil. .

  • Damsteep: As its name suggests, it is on a steep slope, and the limestone-rich soil gives the wine a unique flavor. .

  • Netherwood: The oldest vineyard, established in 1986. Without artificial irrigation, the grapevines establish deep roots on their own, resulting in concentrated flavors. .

"Hands-Off" Winemaking

Winemaker Nicholas Brown was named New Zealand's top winemaker in 2022. His philosophy is "as little intervention as possible." They don't use artificial yeasts; fermentation occurs only with natural yeasts present in the vineyard. They also avoid filtration to clarify the wine, so the pure, energy-filled flavors inherent in the grapes are bottled as they are. .

The Joy of Visiting the Winery

On the premises, there is a famous restaurant that annually receives the highest rating of "two stars" in a prestigious local guide. Here, you can enjoy dishes made with fresh organic ingredients from their own fields and local farmers, paired with their proud wines. They also offer a special experience of having a B&B stay within the vineyard, where you can have the quiet night fields to yourself after the staff have gone home. .

Black Estate is not merely a place that produces wine, but a passionate winery where you can experience the nature and food culture of the region as a whole.
