Riedel seminar

Sommelier Blog

The other day, I had a meeting to discuss an event at Riedel Nagoya.

Riedel is, as you may know, a pioneer in wine glass manufacturing based in Austria.

Huh? You know that?

Damn, wine lovers have a bad habit of assuming that their own common sense about wine is everyone else's. That's bad.

To explain more clearly, Riedel was the first company in the world to discover that the shape of the glass affects the aroma and taste of wine .

They advocate that by using a different glass depending on the wine being poured, the potential of that wine can be brought out, and this concept has now become the standard in the wine glass world.

So, does this explanation give you any idea of what Riedel is?

Riedel has a shop in Nagoya where they hold various wine events.

And now, a seminar event on New Zealand wine has been held, and Iwasu has been handpicked to be the lecturer.

Thank you, thank you.

The wine we will be tasting is, of course, Cloudy Bay, a representative New Zealand brand that I mentioned in my previous blog post.

From the entire lineup, we selected one sparkling wine, two white wines, and one red wine to serve on the day. We discussed and decided the glass in which each wine should be served the other day.

I visited Riedel for the first time in a while, and I was impressed with how great a glass shop it is. I was fascinated by the large number of beautiful wine glasses.

Recently, there are some with colored stems and bowls that sparkle when you spin them, which are quite stylish.

I can't help but smile when I think about what kind of wine would go well with such a stylish glass.

After all, wine is not a complete drink with just one bottle. It only becomes wine when poured into the right glass .

This time, the seminar will cost money, but you will receive a souvenir of one of the wine glasses used in the seminar that I think will go well with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. I think it will be priced at a very reasonable price.

By the way, the glass is a new model that we don't use in our store. If the seminar proves popular, we might consider introducing it.

Detailed information about the seminar will probably be announced on Riedel's website soon, so please check it out if you're interested.

Oh yeah, speaking of glass.

When purchasing Bokumo Wine online, we are sometimes asked, "Do you have a set of wine glasses and wine?"

What do you think? For example, a suggestion like "I think the New Zealand wines sold at Bokumo Wine will taste even better if you drink them in this glass" could be useful for mail order sales.

But there's also the issue of storage, so I think there are many people who just buy what they like. I'd be grateful for your opinions on this matter.

Anyway, I'm happy to see wine-related events gradually coming back.

Before COVID-19, I used to hold wine seminars every month at Junkudo Bookstore (and before that at Maruzen), but for the past three years or so, I have rarely spoken about wine in front of customers outside of Bokumo's store.

The radio job that I've been doing longer than the wine job is, so to speak, "editing and delivering complex information in a way that is as easy to understand as possible within a set time frame."

I've been doing this since I was a university student, so I think the idea of "making difficult things easy to understand" is ingrained in me.

So even after I made wine my main job, I still have the desire to somehow explain the complex world of wine in a way that doesn't make it complicated.

So I am very grateful to have the opportunity to hold this wine seminar.

But at the beginning, he said that he "knew" Riedel, which was no good. His skills are getting stale.

If I come across a noun I don't understand, it becomes boring straight away. I'll keep that in mind as I prepare for the seminar.

That's right.

TikTok, short videos on Instagram, and YouTube Shorts are all popular these days. To put it simply, they are the ultimate "media that pursues ease of understanding."

I knew it was definitely something I should do, but as someone who is used to long conversations, I've been making excuses for several years now saying that I just can't find a good way to do it...

It's about time to do it!

Our passion remains the same as it was back in radio. We want to make the complicated world of wine as simple as possible. Even though the format has changed, we will keep that passion and give it a go.

Once I'm confident about the results, I'll let you know here. If you don't hear anything, you can just guess.
