Japanese-made Pinot Noir with subdued tannins

There's a vineyard on a hillside in North Canterbury, in an isolated spot with nothing but limestone quarries around it.
It's called "Isolated Hill."
This slope with its broad clay-limestone soil has a complex geological structure, where basaltic soil formed over limestone clay due to earthquakes. The soil composition, with layers of calcium clay and silt loam, creates an environment similar to Burgundy.
The grapes used by Naoyuki Maro for this wine are 100% "Abel," a unique Pinot Noir clone native to New Zealand. This clone is known for producing a delicate and elegant style, expressing the character of this region.
About the Winemaking
Pinot Noir produced in North Canterbury tends to be on the more full-bodied side.
However, Mr. Maro challenged this trend. He aimed to suppress tannin extraction and enhance softness. This delicate approach is similar to his winemaking in Hokkaido, his home base.
The vines are 21 years old. The grapes are hand-picked. After 100% destemming, natural fermentation occurs in open fermenters. To extract fruit flavor, pigeage is gently performed by hand once or twice a day. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered. This is a limited edition of 1,162 bottles.
Tasting Notes
The appearance is a bright ruby red with some transparency.
When poured into a glass, aromas of red fruits like raspberry and rosehip, and floral notes emerge. Hints of leather and clove spice subtly appear from the background.
On the palate, it has a light and delicate mouthfeel. The tannins are subdued, and the acidity runs straight through. Behind the delicate body, there's a distinctive core strength that seems to come from the calcareous soil. That's this Pinot Noir.
About Aging
It's enjoyable to drink now, with its lively, light fruit aroma. Further complexity will develop with 4-8 years of aging.
Pairing
Pair with dishes that have delicate umami, matching its light flavor.
- Prosciutto + Tapenade (saltiness and umami enhance the wine's fruitiness)
- Roast Beef (Red Wine Sauce) (the acidity of the sauce resonates with the wine's acidity)
- Ajillo with Mushrooms and Bonito (a superb combination of synergistic umami)
