Obon and wine

Earlier this month, Bokumo Wine held a Summer Sale, offering a 15% discount on all products.

"I'm sure a lot of people will be returning home for the Obon holidays this year, so it would be great if they could enjoy some delicious New Zealand wine at that time."

With that in mind, I prepared for this sale together with my staff, but thanks to you all, we received many more orders than we expected. Thank you very much.

So, what do you think? Did the wonderful wines that left our hands help you enjoy your Obon gatherings? Or were they a good companion for a moment of relaxation?

I would be happy if that happened.

When I hear the phrase "Obon wine," I remember the time when my grandmother was still alive.

Now that she has passed away, we no longer have family gatherings, but while she was alive, we would spend Obon with a table lined with sushi, sukiyaki, and stewed Gifu wild vegetables.

About 10 years ago, when I had just become a sommelier.

When I brought wine to a gathering during the Obon holidays, all my relatives were very impressed with it.

My uncle, who usually drinks beer from start to finish, decided to try some wine and flattered me by saying, "The wine chosen by the sommelier is delicious after all."

My uncle used to play with me a lot when I was little, but now that I'm an adult, we don't really have much to talk about when we get together after a long time.

At that time, a new topic of wine came along, and wine helped create excitement.

I remember we talked about things like why French wine bottles don't say the grape variety, why wines grown in warmer climates tend to have a stronger flavor, and what wines go well with sukiyaki.

Even now, when I think back, I think wine is a drink that connects people.

My grandmother doesn't usually drink much alcohol, but when she heard that her grandson had obtained a sommelier qualification, she seemed to become a little interested in wine.

When I asked her, "Grandma, would you like some wine?" she replied, "I guess I'll have a little," and took a sip of the rose wine I had brought with me.

"How's it? Is it delicious?"

"It's delicious. I can drink this."

I was quite moved to see this grandmother, who was about 90 years old at the time, experiencing something for the first time in her life.

No matter how old you are, there is always something new to discover in life. As you live, you encounter new things. I think that's a wonderful thing.

Since then, every year when Obon comes around, I remember my grandmother drinking rosé wine. I see, wine can connect us here and there.

Ah, but grandma.

"Rose wine, this pink wine, is already popular all over the world, but it's not yet popular in Japan. But it will become popular eventually, so you're ahead of the trend, grandma."

I said that at the time, but I'm sorry. Rose isn't popular in Japan yet. I wonder why. lol
