Hey hey Santa

Sommelier Blog

There's something I always remember at Christmas time.

When my daughter was still in elementary school.

On Christmas Eve, before going to bed, my daughter writes a letter.

"Thank you Santa for the present"

I was a little skeptical about saying thank you assuming I would receive a gift, but it's cute, I guess.

On Christmas Eve of the following year, I wondered if there would be a letter again, so I came home from the store late at night and looked under my daughter's pillow.

It said, "To Santa, thank you for the present. Please sign it."

Please sign it.

Yamato or Sagawa?

There is a nicely enclosed square area for you to sign.

I was a bit hesitant, but I wrote a vague signature that sounded appropriate.

following year.

Write your message to Santa below:

The hurdle has gotten higher!

The end of the year is the peak season for restaurants, and it takes all my energy. I come home exhausted and just want to go to bed.

But, I guess I should go along with my dreams here. Maybe it would be better to write it in Finnish, the language of Santa Claus.

By the way, my supervisor in college was a Finnish language specialist. I must have learned a little bit of it then, but I don't remember a thing about it. I ended up getting help from Google Translate and writing "Merry Christmas" in Finnish (or what seemed to be Finnish) without knowing how to read it.

And then the following year.

In December, my daughter and I went to the movies and then went shopping at the mall on the way back.

The mall is decorated with glittering Christmas decorations, and every store is having a Christmas sale.

We just happened to walk into a general store and were talking about the different kinds of things they sold.

"Hey, Santa, buy me this."

···picture.

So that's your way of coming out.

I don't know when or how I came to this fantasy conclusion.

But what was the point of all that late-night effort studying Finnish up until last year? Could it be that my daughter had already been thinking, "Dad, this is going to be difficult. I wonder how to write it?"

Oh well. I guess this is also proof of growth.

I don't remember what I ended up buying at the general store, but I clearly remember the adult-like tone in which she casually asked me, "Hey, Santa."

Maybe in the future, she'll find evidence of her husband's infidelity and nonchalantly file for divorce, saying, "Hey, hey, cheating husband," but maybe I'm thinking too much.

Anyway, for me, when I think of Christmas, it's not dinner with my girlfriend, or illuminations, or cake, but the words my sixth-grade daughter said that are my number one memory.

My daughter is also a student taking entrance exams this year. The Common Test is just around the corner. It's time to push herself.

Although Santa doesn't say "Hey, hey, Santa" anymore, I think I'll prepare something to encourage him to study this year. Maybe chocolate will be okay.

Oh, that's right. How about attaching a message card in Finnish? I'd be happy if it made the recipient smile.
