Inspiration for life

On Saturday, Bokumo was the event store.

The afternoon session was an event held at my alma mater, Nagoya University. The speaker was Professor Atsuo Iida, who studies electric catfish and other fish.

The theme was "Paper and Reporting." As someone who used to work in the media industry, it was a topic that made me a little nervous.

I thought that there would be harsh criticism of the media from the researchers' side, along the lines of, "The media is exaggerating too much!"

But in reality, it wasn't that simple.

It is true that in some scientific articles, the researchers who actually wrote the papers may be concerned that certain expressions used may be misleading, and sometimes only a part of the story is taken out and used as a sensationalist headline.

However, the media is destined to attract the attention of many people. Moreover, not only people with specialized knowledge write articles.

The media has its own unique system, so it is inevitable that there will be discrepancies with what researchers claim.

That's why, the professor said, if you come across something that interests you when reading the articles, it would be interesting to be curious and ask yourself, "Is that really true?" and read the paper on which the article is based.

I couldn't help but nod my head at this.

Nowadays, thanks to tools like ChatGPT and DeepL, it's much easier to read English papers, so you can dive into the world of academia without having to take a big leap.

The Ig Nobel Prize will be announced soon. This year, too, the winning research will probably be published online. I thought it might be fun to dig up the papers from the article.

Then there is a question and answer session.

As I felt the atmosphere in the venue become more lively with the questions and answers, I suddenly thought, "Ah, it's been a long time since I've seen such a sight."

This is what Bokumo was like before COVID.

I wanted to create a place where people with specialised expertise could exchange ideas and learn new things. With that in mind, I installed audio and visual equipment and created a mini stage in the shop.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the number of events has been reduced to zero, and even after the pandemic has passed, events are being held less frequently than before (I have too many things to do and I can't keep up -- that's my excuse).

But, it's good to have a place like this where you can meet new people. I've made a point of saying that I should continue to hold these events.

And then night.

Bokumo was rented out exclusively for the event. This was a party to celebrate the 60th birthday of someone I've known since I was a university student 30 years ago. I'm grateful that they chose Bokumo as the venue for this important milestone event.

That's what that person told me.

"Your sentences are too long!"

It's about this post...

"Writing that length of text every week is something someone who really loves themselves would do."

Hmm. I see, because of this article, I'm seen as a man overflowing with narcissism. As expected from someone who has been watching me for 30 years. I can't say a word.

This great senior was wearing a red kimono, being celebrated (and teased) by the former employees of the company he used to work for, laughing and drinking wine. I thought it was a wonderful sight.

Both the daytime event and the private evening event were places where people who came could have some inspiration for their lives. That's what it felt like on a good Saturday.

...I tried to keep this short so as not to be an eyesore to everyone, but it ended up exceeding 1,500 characters.

Too bad. This time too, I was showing my narcissism. Next time, I'll aim for under 1000 characters!
