Burgundy-esque Otago Pinot

Valli Vineyards is a winery that knows the various areas of Otago well. It is particularly known for its expertise in Pinot Noir.

Its vineyards are located in Gibbston, Bannockburn, and Bendigo, which are important sub-regions within Central Otago. It also has vineyards in Waitaki in North Otago, which is quite a distance away.

Even within Otago, there is considerable variation in climate and soil, and each area produces grapes that reflect its unique characteristics.

What makes Valli so enjoyable is the opportunity to taste the diverse Pinot Noirs of Otago side by side.

So, what about this Gibbston in particular?

It is located in a valley close to Queenstown, New Zealand's premier tourist destination. It is one of the coolest sub-regions in Central Otago, where the valley traps cold air, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly over time. Harvesting can sometimes be delayed until early May.

Pinot grown in cool Gibbston develops delicate and complex aromas due to its long growing season. It can be said to be the most Burgundian of Valli's vineyards.

About the Vineyard

Acquired by Grant Taylor in 1998, this vineyard was also the first in Gibbston Valley to be planted from true north to south.

The row orientation, aligned with the sun's path, maximizes sunlight exposure and supports uniform ripening of the berries.

At an elevation of 343 to 351m, well-drained river gravel lies beneath schist-derived loess, allowing the vines to root deeply.

The planting density is 4040 vines/ha, and the yield is a meticulously low 1kg per vine. The density and complexity of the fruit are a result of this vineyard's cultivation methods.

Winemaking

25% of the harvested fruit is fermented as whole clusters. Using the stems results in a slightly lighter color, but adds herbal nuances and spicy accents behind the fruit.

Aged for 11 months in French oak barrels, with 30% new oak. The wine is finished to emphasize the character of the fruit and minerals, without excessive oak flavor. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Notes

Fruit aromas of cherry and fig rise, along with floral notes reminiscent of violet. With time, mineral notes of wet stone and graphite, and nuances of wild herbs emerge.

On the palate, there is a firm sense of tight acidity. The subtly sweet nuances gradually transition to a smooth umami reminiscent of wild strawberries. The finish is long, the tannins silky. A slightly spicy impression lingers.

If drinking now, decant. This wine has an aging potential of over 15 years.

Pairing

Choosing dishes with the same mindset as pairing with Burgundy Pinot Noir will bring out the best in this wine.

Duck is a classic companion. The richness of fatty duck meat and the delicate tannins and acidity of Gibbston Pinot are highly compatible and enhance each other. Roasting adds a savory aroma, and in a hotpot, the acidity of yuzu ponzu resonates well with the wine's freshness.

If pairing with chicken, ensure herbs are well-seasoned. Confit made with thyme or rosemary will naturally complement the herbal nuances in the wine.

Mushrooms also play an excellent supporting role in bringing out the complexity of this wine. Mushroom risotto offers a pleasant layering of earthy umami and the wine's minerality.

About the Winery: Valli Vineyards

Valli Wines was founded in 1998 by legendary New Zealand winemaker Grant Taylor. The winery is named in honor of his great-grandfather, Giuseppe Valli, who immigrated from Italy.

At the heart of their winemaking is the philosophy of "bottling the true character of the land." They convey through their wines the fascinating way the taste of the same grape variety can change dramatically depending on where it grows (climate and soil).

Two "Genius Winemakers" Recognized Worldwide

Valli's greatest strength lies in the partnership of two world-class winemakers.

Grant Taylor (Founder)

A leading pioneer in New Zealand. He is the world's only legendary winemaker to have won the unprecedented "Best Pinot Noir Award" four times at international competitions in London.

Jen Parr (Co-Winemaker)

A talented winemaker who joined in 2015. Hailing from the USA, she has extensive national and international experience and has won New Zealand's "Winemaker of the Year Award" – a truly exceptional talent.

Four Vineyards with Completely Different Personalities

Valli primarily produces Pinot Noir, the king of red wines, as well as white wines such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Riesling. Their four regions (vineyards) each have completely different characteristics.

Gibbston

Characteristics

A very cool place where grapes grow slowest.

Taste

Slow ripening creates elegant, refined, complex, and delicate flavors. A rare "orange wine" is also produced here.

Bannockburn

Characteristics

Only 20km from Gibbston, but a warmer area.

Taste

Produces powerful wines with dark color, strong fruit flavors, and moderate tannins forming the structure.

Bendigo

Characteristics

A warm vineyard that is always sunny and retains heat well.

Taste

Characterized by rich, full-bodied, and voluminous flavors, described as a "friendly beast."

Waitaki

Characteristics

A new region established in 2004. It has limestone soil, similar to Burgundy, a high-end French region.

Taste

Characterized by a fragrant aroma like perfume, crisp, clear acidity, and minerality. The Chardonnay, in particular, is considered exceptional.

The Terroir Woven by Two Artisans. Inviting Drinkers on a Special Journey

Valli Wines is a winery born from the fusion of New Zealand's magnificent nature and the exceptional skill of two artisans.

Even without complex specialized knowledge, the greatest appeal is being able to clearly experience the differences in terroir by simply "comparing wines from different vineyards." From wine beginners to enthusiasts, they deliver beautiful and honest wines that take drinkers on a special journey.

About the Central Otago Region

The southernmost wine region in New Zealand, Central Otago, is known as a renowned Pinot Noir region and is considered one of the "three great Pinot Noir regions of the world," alongside Burgundy and Oregon.

In addition to Pinot Noir, the region focuses on cultivating aromatic white grape varieties. This area is the only semi-continental climate among New Zealand's wine regions, characterized by large diurnal temperature variations, and a cool, very dry climate.

It is also a treasure trove of small wineries, and winery tours based in the picturesque town of Queenstown are popular.
