Power and Structural Beauty

Among Central Otago's sub-regions, Bannockburn stands out for its exceptionally high reputation.
In 2022, Bannockburn's fame grew even further when it was registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) by the New Zealand Intellectual Property Office (Bannockburn is the only sub-region in Central Otago with independent GI certification).
Nestled within the Cromwell Basin, Bannockburn is characterized by abundant sunshine, dryness, and excellent drainage. Grapes basking in the Otago sun tend to produce wines with concentrated fruit flavors and rich tannins.
So, what happens when Valli Vineyards, which owns vineyards in multiple areas of Otago, crafts a Pinot from Bannockburn?
The answer is "power and structural beauty." The inherent strength of Bannockburn and its complex flavors are perfectly captured in the bottle.
Since the winemaker meticulously brings out the unique character of each vineyard in Gibbston, Bendigo, and Waitaki in North Otago, you can truly appreciate its distinctiveness when compared to other sub-regions.
About the Vineyard
Valli's Bannockburn vineyard is located on Hall Road, with plantings dating back to 2000.
Situated at an altitude of 350m, it features sandy, deep, well-draining soil over wind-blown loess and schist bedrock. The roots grow deep, absorbing moisture and nutrients even in the dry climate.
Wines from this vineyard are clearly made for aging. The winemaker asserts that this vineyard has the potential for "over 20 years" of maturation.
Over time, the rich tannins slowly bind at a molecular level, mellowing the liquid.
Winemaking
35% of the harvested fruit is fermented whole cluster. Using the stems adds floral aromas and complex spice notes to the powerful fruit.
The wine is aged for 11 months in French oak barrels, with 27% new oak. The oak influence is subtly restrained to highlight the fruit's concentration. It is cross-flow filtered before bottling.
Tasting Notes
When poured into the glass, intense fruit aromas of blackberry and dark cherry are layered with floral notes of jasmine and lilac. With time, herbaceous hints of wild thyme, licorice, and a subtle smoky nuance emerge.
On the palate, velvety tannins firmly embrace the fruit, and a highly concentrated flavor slowly unfolds. Fresh acidity maintains balance, leading to a sensual finish.
The lingering aroma on the aftertaste is truly complex. Clean acidity, herbaceous notes, the umami of dried fruit, and a subtle bitterness of spice coalesce to fill the nasal cavity.
If drinking now, decanting is recommended. With a potential for over 20 years of aging, it would also be excellent to save it for a special occasion.
Pairing
The concentrated fruit flavors and rich tannins of Bannockburn pair well with meat dishes that have robust umami and fat.
For beef fillet or seared lamb, season generously with spices. The tannins and spices will resonate, enhancing the wine's structure.
Sukiyaki is also surprisingly complementary. The sweet and savory broth beautifully matches the fruitiness of this wine.
If you're drinking it now, allow it to breathe for about an hour. The youthful fruit and tannins will gradually soften, revealing its inherent complexity.
About the Winery: Valli Vineyards

At the heart of their winemaking philosophy is "bottling the essence of the land." They demonstrate through their wines the fascinating way the taste of the same grape variety can change dramatically depending on where it's grown (climate and soil).
Two World-Renowned "Genius Winemakers"
Valli's greatest strength lies in the collaboration of two world-class winemakers.
Grant Taylor (Founder)

A pioneer of New Zealand winemaking. He is the only legendary winemaker in the world to have won the unprecedented "Best Pinot Noir Award" four times at international competitions in London.
Jen Parr (Co-Winemaker)

A talented winemaker who joined in 2015. Originally from the US, she has extensive domestic and international experience and has won New Zealand's "Winemaker of the Year" award.
Four Vineyards with Distinct Personalities
At Valli, they mainly produce the king of red wines, "Pinot Noir," along with white wines such as "Chardonnay," "Pinot Gris," and "Riesling." The four regions (vineyards) they manage each possess completely different characteristics.
Gibbston

Characteristics
A very cool area where grapes ripen most slowly.
Flavor Profile
Slow ripening results in elegant, refined, complex, and delicate flavors. A rare "orange wine" is also produced here.
Bannockburn

Characteristics
Though only 20km from Gibbston, it is a warmer area.
Flavor Profile
Produces powerful wines with deep color, strong fruitiness, and a well-balanced tannic structure.
Bendigo

Characteristics
A warm vineyard that consistently receives abundant sunshine and retains heat.
Flavor Profile
Described as a "friendly beast," it features a rich, opulent, and full-bodied flavor.
Waitaki

Characteristics
A new region that began in 2004. The soil is "limestone," similar to that of Burgundy, a prestigious French region.
Flavor Profile
Characterized by a fragrant aroma like perfume, crisp, clear acidity, and minerality. The Chardonnay, in particular, is considered exquisite.
Valli Wine is a winery born from the fusion of New Zealand's magnificent nature and the exceptional skill of two artisans.
Even without complex technical knowledge, the greatest appeal is that you can clearly experience the differences in terroir by simply "comparing wines from different vineyards."
About the Central Otago Region
Central Otago, the southernmost wine region in New Zealand, is renowned for its Pinot Noir and is often called one of the "world's three great Pinot Noir regions," alongside Burgundy and Oregon.
Beyond Pinot Noir, the region focuses on cultivating aromatic white grapes. It is the only wine region in NZ with a semi-continental climate, characterized by large diurnal temperature swings, coolness, and extreme dryness.
It is also a treasure trove of small-scale wineries, and wine tours based in the scenic town of Queenstown are popular.
