Rippon's Signature: The Harmonious Pinot

About the Vineyard

Rippon's vineyards are often called "the most beautiful vineyards in the world." The north-facing slopes spread across the western shore of Lake Wanaka's Roy's Bay create a truly ethereal landscape. Light reflecting off the lake also reaches the vineyards.

This Pinot Noir, bearing the winery's name "Rippon," is made from all the mature vines in Rippon's own vineyards. Grapes not used for the single-vineyard wines "Emma's Block" or "Tinker's Field" are also blended into this Rippon wine.

Winemaker Nick Mills himself describes it as "like an orchestra," a wine that truly represents the winery. We hope you'll begin your journey into Rippon's charm with this bottle.

Winemaking

Grapes are hand-harvested from biodynamically grown mature vines. After fermentation by wild yeast in 13 separate 2-ton stainless steel tanks for each parcel, the wine is aged for 16 months in 225L French oak barrels (24% new oak to 4-year-old barrels). After blending, it undergoes natural malolactic fermentation and is bottled unfiltered.

Tasting Notes

The color is a slightly translucent ruby red.

The aroma is initially reserved and calm. When swirled, hints of violet, red berries, and subtle earthy notes quietly emerge. As time passes, layers of plum, raspberry, and forest floor elements unfold.

On the palate, vibrant fruit flavors of cranberry, raspberry, and pomegranate spread. Complex nuances reminiscent of graphite and black tea intertwine, with a long, silky tannic finish.

It has an exquisite balance, neither too heavy nor overly dense. It can be described as fresh and refined.

James Suckling 97 points, Wine Advocate 93+ points (both for the 2020 vintage).

Suggested Pairings

This wine, which allows you to experience all of Rippon's parcels in one glass, is a bottle to open for a slightly special meal.

It pairs well with confit de canard, herb-grilled lamb, pork belly braised in Pinot Noir, or Dongpo pork. It also complements Japanese cuisine, such as grilled chicken (yakitori), grilled eel (kabayaki), and matsutake mushroom dobin-mushi.

About the Winery "Rippon"

Rippon is located on the western shore of Lake Wanaka in Central Otago, New Zealand's South Island, overlooking the Southern Alps. This land has been owned by the Mills family for four generations since 1912, making it an indispensable part of the region's winemaking history.

Winemaking began in 1974, when founder Rolfe Mills experimentally planted over 30 varieties of grapes.

Serious cultivation began in the 1980s, and the first wine was released in 1989.

Winemaker: Nick Mills

The winery is currently led by Nick Mills, the founder's son. He was originally a national champion in freestyle skiing, but an injury led him to France, where he gained experience at prestigious wineries such as DRC and Nicolas Potel.

He returned to Rippon in 2002 and took over the winemaking.

Terroir and Cultivation/Winemaking

The vineyards are in a cool continental climate and are characterized by volcanic schist soil. This soil imparts minerality and concentrated flavors to the wine.

Furthermore, since the vineyards are free from phylloxera, ungrafted "own-rooted" grapevines are cultivated. Many of these are old vines planted in the 1970s, grown without irrigation and solely with homemade compost.

Organic farming was introduced in 1995, followed by biodynamic farming in 2002. In winemaking, wild yeasts are used, and a style of minimal intervention is maintained.

Grape Varieties and Accolades

The main grape varieties currently produced are Pinot Noir, Gamay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Ostainer, totaling seven types.

Pinot Noir, in particular, is highly acclaimed and sometimes referred to as "New Zealand's DRC." In 2008, it received the highest score ever for a New Zealand red wine from Wine Advocate, and in 2010, it was selected as the inaugural "New Zealand Pinot of the Year" by Wine Spectator, establishing its international reputation.

About the Central Otago Region

Central Otago, the southernmost wine region in New Zealand, is renowned for its Pinot Noir and is considered one of the "three great Pinot Noir regions of the world," alongside Burgundy and Oregon.

Beyond Pinot Noir, the region also focuses on cultivating aromatic white grape varieties. Central Otago is unique among New Zealand's wine regions for its semi-continental climate, characterized by significant diurnal temperature variations, coolness, and extreme dryness.

It is also home to a wealth of small wineries, and winery tours based in the picturesque town of Queenstown are popular.
