Sweet and sour taste is pleasant

The defining feature of this Riesling is its excellent value for money.

It is probably one of the most reasonably priced New Zealand Riesling wines imported to Japan.

Why is this price possible?

This can be attributed to the extraordinary passion of the winery, Seyfried, that produces this wine.

Seyfried is a winery run by Hermann Seyfried, who was born in Austria and studied winemaking in Germany.

Riesling is a popular variety in Germany and Austria, and in an effort to make it popular in New Zealand, where the winery moved, they have been cultivating it in Nelson on the South Island since 1973.

The 1970s was a time when wine production in New Zealand was still not very popular, but they have been making Riesling ever since.

In other words, Seyfried is a pioneer of Riesling in New Zealand.

Seyfried's desire to have as many people as possible drink Riesling, a specialty of his hometown, was passed down to his sons, and the vineyard gradually expanded, becoming one of the largest in Nelson.

And by adopting modern winemaking systems, their wine production has increased dramatically, allowing them to supply wine at a lower price than other wineries.

Of course the quality is impeccable.

"Old Coach Road" is an entry-level series in the Seyfried lineup. The Riesling in particular is outstanding, as it was the founder Hermann Seyfried's pet project.

The aroma has a slight oiliness, and when you put it in your mouth you can clearly taste the fruitiness of green apples and citrus fruits with a pleasant acidity.

The aftertaste is a long-lasting, rounded, honey-like sweetness. The residual sugar is 12.1g/L. It's not too sweet, and it's exquisitely balanced.

The 2023 vintage in particular has floral and ginger-like nuances, and these complex elements further enhance the fruity flavor.

It can be enjoyed on its own, but if you want to pair it with a meal, it would be best to go with German dishes like sausages, sauerkraut, or Bäckeoff.

It also goes well with fried seafood such as fried shrimp, fried scallops, and frittered white fish.

It's a great idea to have a bottle in your fridge. If you have any left over, you can enjoy it for 3-4 days.

By the way, I served a variety of New Zealand wines at an outdoor event the other day, and the most popular by far was this Old Coach Road Riesling.

I realized that this sweet and sour flavor is a perfect match for the outdoors.

I'm thinking of taking it camping next time!

About the Seyfried Estate Winery

Seifried Estate is a winery opened by the Seifried couple, immigrants from Austria. They started cultivating vineyards in the 1970s and are now known as the oldest winery in the Nelson region. They specialize in Austrian and German varieties from their native region and have won numerous international competitions.

About Nelson

Nelson is located in the northern part of the South Island and is affectionately known as "Sunny Nelson" due to the extremely long hours of sunshine throughout the year.

This relatively small wine region is mostly made up of small wineries known as boutique wineries.

Taking advantage of the abundant sunshine, aromatic white wines such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Gris are mainly produced. Pinot Noir, which has a strong fruity flavor, is popular for red wine. Nelson is also famous for producing hops and fruits.
