New Zealand Albariño in the spotlight

Albariño is a grape variety that is currently attracting attention worldwide.

This variety was originally grown in the coastal regions of Spain and Portugal (Rías Baixas and Minho, for example), and has long been a beloved indigenous variety representative of the region.

Albariño wine is also known as the "wine of the sea".

It is called this because it is produced by the coast and goes very well with seafood, and is considered a white wine that seafood restaurants around the world would want to have on hand.

The taste is characterized by a crisp acidity produced by the cool sea breeze and a rich minerality.

In recent years, high-quality Albariño wine has been produced in coastal areas of Japan, such as Niigata, and is becoming a hot topic.

And in New Zealand, which is surrounded by the sea, Albariño wine is gradually beginning to be produced in response to the recent global surge in Albariño enthusiasm.

Neudorf, the winery that produces Neudorf Rosie's Block Mouterie Albariño, is based in Nelson, New Zealand's largest fishing port on the South Island.

Mooterie is the name of a region in Nelson. It is a gentle hill located 2-3km from the coast.

Rosie's Block is the name of their own vineyard within the moutere. The vineyard faces north and is very sunny. It is certified BioGro, an organic vineyard.

Vineyards in New Zealand tend to suffer from water shortages overall, and many of them require irrigation systems, but this field has a clay layer underground that stores water, making it possible to grow the grapes without irrigation.

All grapes are hand-picked, whole bunches are pressed, and then fermented in stainless steel tanks with wild yeasts.

Because malolactic fermentation is not performed, the wine retains a crisp acidity. In addition, in order to preserve the flavor, the wine is not clarified before bottling.

The aroma is dominated by citrus and flowers. Although it is not as strong as Sauvignon Blanc, it has a gentle acidity reminiscent of pink grapefruit and a sweet aroma like nectar that is pleasant to the senses.

When you put it in your mouth, you will feel a strong acidity, umami, and saltiness. It has a fruity taste, but the finish is dry. The aftertaste with a mineral taste lasts for a long time.

The best pairing would be seafood!

  • Grilled shrimp
  • Scallop Carpaccio
  • Steamed mussels in white wine
  • Fried squid
  • Grilled salted sea bream

I think the chances of it matching would be higher with "white seafood" like those mentioned above, rather than red fish like tuna, bonito, or yellowtail.

New Zealand's first Master Sommelier, Cameron Douglas, gave this wine 94 points.

If you're craving seafood, this wine is the perfect choice. It's also perfect for a seafood barbecue or hand-rolled sushi party.

About the winery "Neudorf Vineyards"

Neudorf_logo

Neudorf Vineyards is a family-owned winery located in the Upper Moutere region of Nelson.

Established in 1978, the winery was started by Tim and Judy Finn, who planted grape vines in the Nelson region before it had developed into a wine-producing region. They considered the Upper Moutere a "special place," built a house, and cultivated the land. They named the winery "Neudorf," which means "new village" in German , and started the winery.

Mr. and Mrs. Neudorf

The grapes are grown in as natural a condition as possible, and no unnecessary substances are added during the winemaking process. From an early stage, we have adopted sustainable farming methods and are making wine with consideration for the natural environment.

In addition to their own vineyards, they also use grapes from two contracted vineyards. By using grapes from neighboring vineyards with different geology, they are able to make wine that takes advantage of the individuality and diversity of the land.

What really made Neudorf famous around the world was the World's Best Wine Tasting, held in the UK in 1993. He won first place in the Chardonnay category at this competition, and his name became known all over the world.

In recent years, Pinot Noir has also been highly acclaimed, and the winery was selected as "New Zealand's Best Producer" in the Tom Stevenson Report in the UK in 2009. Bob Campbell MW also commented that the 2014 Moutelie Chardonnay is "the best white Burgundy," and gave it the highest score of 100 points, the first time it has been praised.

The name of this wine, Tiritiri, means "shared" in Maori.

Currently, the Finns are the owners, and the business is run by craftsmen who have inherited their vision.

About Nelson

Nelson is located in the northern part of the South Island and is affectionately known as "Sunny Nelson" due to the extremely long hours of sunshine throughout the year.

This relatively small wine region is mostly made up of small wineries known as boutique wineries.

Taking advantage of the abundant sunshine, aromatic white wines such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Gris are mainly produced. Pinot Noir, which has a strong fruity flavor, is popular for red wine. Nelson is also famous for producing hops and fruits.
