Elegant Otago Pinot Made by a Japanese Winemaker

This Pinot is a limited production, available only in 2024.

It's a masterpiece created by Naoyuki Maro, a winemaker who travels between Japan and New Zealand, using grapes from Central Otago that he had long had his eye on.

The grapes come from Bannockburn, a sub-region within Central Otago known for its distinctive character. Here, calcareous silt loam soils are widespread, holding minerals and complexity different from the marine limestone of Waipara.

Maro’s reason for focusing on this region is clear: He was confident that "the grapes of Bannockburn have high potential that can only be unlocked through maximum extraction."

"Maximum extraction" refers to thoroughly drawing out the pigments, tannins, and flavor components contained in the grape skins and seeds during the winemaking process. By repeatedly performing pigeage (punching down the cap of skins that rises during fermentation), the fruit and skins are brought into sufficient contact, imbuing the wine with concentration and complexity. Maro challenged himself with a winemaking style similar to that of the prestigious "Bass Phillip" in Australia, where he once trained.

About the Winemaking

The grapes, from 25-year-old vines, were harvested by hand on March 28, 2024. After 100% destemming, natural fermentation occurred in open-top fermenters. Pigeage was performed twice daily to encourage maximum extraction. The wine was aged for 14 months in French oak, 50% new and 50% used. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

This is a limited edition with only 1,248 bottles produced.

Tasting Notes

A raspberry red with a hint of purple.

When poured into the glass, a robust fruit aroma is complemented by subtle, integrated oak accents, adding depth. There are notes of American cherry, violet, and a hint of clove spice. As it aerates, appetizing aromas of black and green olives also emerge.

The palate is rather rich, with spicy nuances from the oak lingering on the finish.

Aging Potential

It has an aging potential of 5 to 8 years. If drinking now, decanting is recommended to enjoy the slowly evolving aromas.

Pairing

As this wine is made by a Japanese producer, it might pair particularly well with Japanese cuisine. Its moderate richness allows it to complement dishes slightly beyond typical Pinot Noir pairings.

  • Yakitori (with sauce) (The umami of soy sauce and sugar beautifully harmonizes with the wine's fruitiness)
  • Tuna Cutlets (The richness of the fried coating and the wine's structure support each other)
  • Sukiyaki (The sweet and savory umami of the warishita broth enhances the wine's complexity)
  • Beef Tagliata (A classic combination where the umami of the meat and the wine's minerality resonate)

About Maro Wines NZ

MARO Wines is a wine brand crafted by winemaker Naoyuki Maro. Maro gained experience at a winery in Hokkaido and studied winemaking abroad, continuing his unique approach of making wine in both Japan and New Zealand.

When it's winter in Japan, New Zealand in the Southern Hemisphere enters its grape harvest season. Maro travels to New Zealand during this time to make wine using local grapes. By gaining experience in both Japan and New Zealand, MARO Wines creates wines that cherish the unique characteristics of each region.

Savoring the Winemaker's Individuality and the Charm of the Land

MARO Wines' New Zealand wines are not flashy but subtly convey the winemaker's careful approach and the land's distinct personality. A bottle created by a Japanese winemaker working with New Zealand's nature and local colleagues embodies the excitement of cross-border winemaking.

These little-known New Zealand wines offer the charm of complementing everyday meals while also creating special moments.

About the Central Otago Region

Central Otago, New Zealand's southernmost wine region, is renowned for its Pinot Noir and is often referred to as one of the "world's three great Pinot Noir regions," alongside Burgundy and Oregon.

Beyond Pinot Noir, the region also focuses on cultivating aromatic white grape varieties. Central Otago is the only wine region in NZ with a semi-continental climate, characterized by significant diurnal temperature shifts, cool temperatures, and very dry conditions.

It's also a hub for small-scale wineries, and winery tours based in the scenic town of Queenstown are popular.
