Mahi means "craft" in Maori. We believe in natural manufacturing. This Pinot Noir has a unique flavor that is not only fruity but also has many layers of complex flavors.
Its range of applications is very wide, but it would be perfect with game, beef, or lamb. It also goes well with Japanese dishes using root vegetables and red fish such as tuna.

Mahi is one of the wineries where I actually visited and realized how wonderful the wines are made.
Owner and winemaker Brian Bicknell gained experience at prestigious wineries around the world and continued to research cultivation and brewing before starting his own winery.
Mahi is a Maori word meaning "craft" or "work of art," and as the name suggests, the company believes in making natural wine.
They express the individuality of the vineyard by sticking to the commitment of "hand-picking grapes," "fermenting with wild yeast," and "not filtering." However, they mainly use stainless steel tanks for fermentation, and the temperature of the fermentation tanks is all controlled by computer, producing wine with advanced technology backed by science.
Made using organically grown grapes and biodynamic farming methods, this wine is a Pinot Noir with a very natural feel.
The aroma of blackcurrant, raspberry, clove, etc. rises from the glass. It has a very pleasant scent, reminiscent of damp ferns in the forest, with a berry-like aroma at the center.
Be sure to swirl this Pinot Noir thoroughly before drinking. It will taste even better if it is exposed to a little air.
When I sampled the wine on site, Brian decanted it before pouring it into a glass.
The taste, like the aroma, is rich in cassis, raspberry, clove, etc. It has a firm acidity and is very elegant.
It has a deep, complex flavor with many layers that create a unique taste.
An elegant and classical Pinot with a European style. Recommended for those who like Burgundy Pinot Noir.
Recommended pairings
This wine has the feel of a classical European wine. European Pinot Noir is typically paired with duck or game.
Lamb steak
Rather than heavy stews, try pairing it with something simple with salt, pepper and a few herbs.
It really brings out the flavor of the meat. It's also great with lamb, a New Zealand specialty.
Chikuzen stew
We also recommend pairing it with Japanese food.
This wine has a hint of root vegetables, so it goes well with stews containing lotus root and burdock. It goes perfectly with "Chikuzenni," a sweet and spicy dish stewed with chicken.
About the Winery "Mahi"
Mahi is a winery based in Marlborough that was founded in 2001 by Brian Bicknell.
Before moving to Marlborough, winemaker Bicknell had been involved in winemaking in various regions around the world for about 15 years.
When he moved there in 1996, most of the wines made in Marlborough were made by blending grapes from different regions in the region, and the individuality and characteristics of the land were being lost. Furthermore, wineries were becoming larger, and overseas media had begun to comment that "many wines tasted the same."
However, Bicknell felt that Marlborough's diverse landscape allowed him to produce different styles of wine, and he decided to start making "single vineyard" wines again rather than regional blends.
This was the beginning of the Mahi winery.
The style of wine that Mahi aims for is "not a fruity, fruit bomb-like style, but wine that places more emphasis on texture and balance, and leaves a satisfying feeling in the mouth."
With a style that sets it apart from Marlborough wines, which are synonymous with "fresh and fruity," the winery expresses the quality and diversity of its wines and can be said to be a leading winery in the region.
The label also features a fern, a plant native to New Zealand, which represents strength, life and growth.

Marlborough has ideal natural conditions for grape growing, such as abundant sunshine and large temperature differences throughout the day, and more than 80% of New Zealand's wine is produced there.
