Unknown variety, Saint Laurent
New Zealand has no indigenous grape varieties. In this New World country, all the grapes planted there were brought from somewhere.
Sauvignon Blanc is the leading wine, followed by Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot. In a sense, it is only natural that the varieties available are all major globally.
But sometimes I can't help but look twice, Sometimes you come across a variety that makes you think, "What is this?"
Saint Laurent.
Do you all know?
It's great, a rare variety that we haven't seen in a while. I was very excited to try the newly arrived Saint Laurent! So, what does it taste like?
But before that.
Where does Saint Laurent come from?
Saint-Laurent is a black grape variety that has a long history and has been cultivated mainly in Austria and the Czech Republic.
The name "Saint Laurent" comes from the fact that it is a grape variety that begins to change color around August 10th, which is the Christian holiday "Saint Lawrence Day" (there are various theories as to when this happened).
Incidentally, the fashion brand Yves Saint Laurent also has the same origin, Saint Laurent. Saint Laurent is an occasional surname in France.
DNA analysis has shown that the Saint Laurent variety is a descendant of Pinot Noir, and it is said to possess some of the elegance and delicacy of Pinot Noir.
However, it is difficult to cultivate and susceptible to disease, and because of its difficulty in handling, it has been avoided in many growing areas.
However, there are producers in New Zealand who have overcome these difficulties and are producing delicious wines.

Judge Rock Saint Laurent 2017
The winery, Judge Rock, produces rare Saint Laurent grapes in Central Otago, New Zealand's southernmost wine region, and produces exquisite wines.
This is a family-run winery known for its elegant Pinot Noir. They have about 2,500 Saint-Laurent vines planted in their own vineyards, and they grow it as a signature variety alongside Pinot.
Tasting
In the glass, it is a slightly darker ruby red than typical Pinot Noir, with a subtle aroma of red fruits such as raspberry and pomegranate, complemented by a subtle hint of clove.
The taste is pure and clear, with a soft and well-balanced finish that is easy to drink.
The smooth tannins from aging linger on the finish, and the nose reveals a moist forest undergrowth. The taste will have you wanting more and more.
Personally, I think this wine has a subtle deliciousness that reminds me of Austrian or Japanese Zweigelt.
Pairing
It pairs perfectly with red meat. for example,
- Chicken and mushroom stewed in tomato sauce
- Pork shabu-shabu (soy sauce base)
- Red fish such as tuna and bonito
Soft tannins and red fruit notes bring out the flavor of meat and fish.
It complements the food rather than overpowering it with its strength, making it a great supporting actor that really brings out the flavor of your food.
About the Winery "Judge Rock"

Judge Rock is a small family-owned winery run by the Jacobson-Ciaroni family.
Their motto is "elegant, sensual and intimate," and they aim to create wines that are balanced rather than powerful, familial rather than corporate, and like "romance rather than a blockbuster movie."
They describe themselves as "the Higgs of the world's Pinot Noir," humorously pointing out that although they may be small in size, their existence and numerous awards demonstrate their high quality.
history

Located on the hidden slopes of the Alexandra Basin, the 4-hectare vineyard was first planted in 1998 by Paul's father, John Patrick Joseph Jacobson, and is currently home to 12,500 Pinot Noir and 2,500 Saint-Laurent vines.
The region has an extreme climate, with temperatures ranging from minus 12 degrees Celsius in winter to 35 degrees Celsius in summer, but the cool nights help preserve the freshness and elegant aromas of the grapes.
Since 2019, the farm has been certified organic, and its cultivation is carried out with consideration for the natural environment.
Attention to detail

Their winemaking is meticulous and entirely handcrafted: grapes are hand-picked, fermented with wild yeasts, cold-soaked in stainless steel tanks, and then aged in French oak barrels (both new and used).
The winemaking team is made up of experienced New Zealand winemakers, and owner Paul himself oversees winemaking, drawing on his experience working at Benjamin Leroux in Burgundy.
Unique and Award-Winning Wines

The high quality of Judge Rock's wines has led to them winning numerous gold medals and trophies at national and international competitions, including the Decanter World Wine Awards and the Air New Zealand Wine Awards.
Of particular note are the unique product names that include legal terms.
The wines are characterized by playful names such as "Guilty" (Pet Nat), "The Verdict" (Port), "The Alibi" (Blanc de Noirs), "Your Honour" (Pinot Noir), and "Innocent" (Rose).
They also produce Saint Laurent, a rare variety in New Zealand.
Hospitality

The winery has a cellar door attached to it that is open every day (11am - 5pm). They also have a stall at the Otago Farmers Market in Dunedin every Saturday morning, positioning it as a "cellar door to the world."
Additionally, the vineyard is home to Judge Rock Cottage, a self-catering accommodation offering a relaxing stay with spectacular Central Otago views, starry skies and award-winning wines.
While humbly admitting that "we are so small that we are almost invisible to the world," they continue to express the Central Otago terroir with their passion and the assured quality evidenced by numerous awards.
This is a wonderful winery with a strong love and commitment to wine.
About Central Otago
Central Otago, the southernmost region in the country, is known as a famous producer of Pinot Noir and is known as one of the world's three major Pinot Noir producing regions, along with Burgundy and Oregon.
In addition to Pinot Noir, the region is also focusing on the cultivation of aromatic white grapes. This region is the only one of New Zealand's wine-producing regions with a semi-continental climate, characterized by large daily temperature differences, coolness, and extreme dryness.
The region is also home to a treasure trove of small wineries, and winery tours based in the scenic town of Queenstown are popular.
