Low-Alcohol, Dry Rosé

More and more people are enjoying rosé wine these days. Even so, not many might say, "I drink it every day!"

However (and I feel like I've said this many times), in France, a major wine-producing country, rosé wine has now surpassed white wine in consumption and become a staple.

It's particularly popular among the younger generation, and in casual establishments like cafes, rosé wine is routinely available by the glass.

Dry types are especially popular. They offer a pleasant mix of white wine's crispness and red wine's complexity, with just the right amount of tannins.

That's why it's a versatile wine that pairs well with anything from appetizers to meat dishes and even ethnic cuisine. Many also have fruity aromas, making them enjoyable on their own. It has established itself as a "convenient wine."

Now, speaking of such a versatile (or "handy"?) rosé wine, let me introduce a bottle that takes convenience to the extreme, which has just arrived.

Its name is 'The Doctors' Rosé.'

This is a "dry rosé" with "low alcohol" content, something that seemed surprisingly absent until now.

I touched on the merits of dry rosé earlier, but this wine is also notable for its low alcohol content.

Dry rosé's strength is that it's not picky about food pairings. And the good thing about low alcohol content is that you can enjoy it in casual daytime settings or during long meals without getting too intoxicated. This wine, crafted by Dr. Forrest, perfectly encapsulates these points.

The grapes used are Pinot Noir and Arneis. Pinot Noir brings fruity notes of strawberry and cherry, while Arneis contributes white flower aromas, blended in exquisite balance.

Furthermore, its production method is particularly noteworthy. Instead of de-alcoholizing regular wine, the sugar content of the grapes is reduced in the vineyard, which keeps the alcohol content low while preserving the rich flavor.

In other words, this wine was created without chemical processing, focusing on how to "reduce the sugar content of the grape berries while maintaining their rich flavor" right in the vineyard.

With an alcohol content of 9.5%—about three-quarters that of regular wine—'The Doctors' Rosé' firmly maintains the taste of a "serious wine that isn't too light."

While it pairs well with any meal, if I had to list some particularly excellent pairings...

  • Cilantro and Nut Salad
  • Garlic Sautéed Octopus and Scallops with Dill
  • Chili Shrimp
  • Currywurst

Something like that.

When paired with dishes that emphasize herbs and spices, this wine's charm will surely shine through.

About the Winery "Forrest Wines"

Image source: Forrest Wines, home of The Doctors

In the New Zealand wine industry, Forrest Wines has established a solid position for over 30 years. Its base is located in the Wairau Valley of the Marlborough region, a prominent wine-producing area in New Zealand.

This land has been the home of the Forrest family for generations, a place they hold dear. Winemaking is intertwined with a deep love for this land, emphasizing the maximization of the region's natural environment.

Founders John and Brigid Forrest initially had successful careers in scientific research and medicine. However, in the late 1980s, when the New Zealand wine industry was still developing, they bravely changed careers and decided to return home to establish a winery.

Their vision for winemaking was to integrate scientific knowledge with the power of nature. As a result, their first vintage, a Merlot Rosé in 1990, won a trophy, and they continued to produce innovative wines one after another.

Their wines are highly regarded by wine lovers and experts worldwide. Particularly in Marlborough, where the wine industry is becoming large-scale, the strong commitment arising from their family-run business is reflected in their unique and high-quality products.

Unlike large-scale wineries, they prioritize high quality with small-scale production, pursuing both tradition and innovation.

Currently, their daughter Beth Forrest leads the operations, bringing new energy with her knowledge and skills acquired from the University of Adelaide in Australia. She aims to create wines that meet modern needs while preserving the family tradition.

Under Beth's leadership, the winery is poised to produce even more diverse and distinctive wines, carrying on its legacy for the next generation.

Their products have won numerous awards in national and international competitions, and their high quality is a result of the balance between the natural environment and a scientific approach. This consistent quality control and respect for nature are inherent in every bottle.

Dr. John Forrest (Founder)

Born and raised in Marlborough, New Zealand in 1955, Dr. John Forrest obtained his PhD in Neurophysiology. In 1988, he returned to Marlborough as a grape grower and, with his wife Brigid, established Forrest Wines. As a pioneer in low-alcohol wines and screw caps, he has paved the way for the potential of New Zealand wine.

Dr. Brigid Forrest (Founder)

Dr. Brigid Forrest was involved in the management and operations of the winery while also working as a physician for over 30 years. She specialized in pregnancy and childbirth care in general practice, served as a community geriatrician managing the physical and mental health of the elderly, and supported a fulfilling life until the very end in hospice care.

Beth Forrest (General Manager/Winemaker)

Beth Forrest holds a Master's degree in Oenology from the University of Adelaide, bringing extensive knowledge, youth, and passion for winemaking to Forrest Wines. She continues to embrace innovative and cutting-edge approaches, sometimes even incorporating "mad scientist" theories, contributing to the advancement of Forrest Wines.

About the Marlborough Region

"Marlborough" is the central hub of New Zealand's wine regions.

With abundant sunshine and significant temperature fluctuations within a day, it boasts favorable natural conditions for grape growth. More than 80% of New Zealand's wine is produced in Marlborough.

Among these, Sauvignon Blanc, characterized by its crisp acidity and abundant fruitiness, accounts for an overwhelming volume of production and is widely loved worldwide as a unique character. For red wines, Pinot Noir, with its appealing rich berry flavors, is popular.
