This is the second wine from Destiny Bay Wines, a winery that produces only three Bordeaux blends. It has a high level of balance between the intense flavor of the fruit and the fragrant aroma of the barrel. It is a wine that can be aged for a long time.

New Zealand's finest red wine. It's sure to be a memorable experience.

Power and elegance

Destiny Bay Mistay 2010

Waiheke Island in Auckland is known as one of New Zealand's leading resort destinations, but it is also known as the "Wine Island" for its thriving wine-producing industry .

In particular, there are many wineries that produce high-end Bordeaux-style wines, and Destiny Bay Wines, the producer of this wine, is one of them.

Destiny Bay Wines produces only three types of wine, all of which are authentic Bordeaux-style wines.

Furthermore, the wine produced here is rare even on a global scale, and due to its small production volume, it is highly valued and luxurious.

For reference, the three types of wine produced by Destiny Bay Wines and their suggested retail prices (excluding tax) are as follows:

  • DESTINAE (approx. 20,000 yen)
  • MYSTAE (approx. 40,000 yen)
  • MAGNA PRAEMIA (approx. 70,000 yen)

(※The differences in the detailed manufacturing process will be explained later, so please take a look.)

This wine , "Mistay" , is the second wine when compared by price.

This wine has a higher blend ratio of Cabernet Sauvignon than Destiny , and is in the style of a left bank Bordeaux wine , skillfully expressing the power of Cabernet.

The moment you put it in your mouth, the aroma of raisins, blackberries, cocoa, and spicy nuances hits your nose, and the powerful tannins and umami aftertaste lasts for a very long time on your tongue.

You can really taste the aroma from the barrel, making this a perfect example of a full-bodied wine.

This is an extremely well-balanced Bordeaux wine that aims to be somewhere between the gentle flavor of "Destiny" and the rich flavor of "Magna Plamia."

This wine is great to drink now, but it can also be aged further. It is a 2010 wine, so it has been 12 years since it was harvested, but it would be nice to let it sit until a special anniversary. It would also make a great gift for someone who has been kind to you.

This wine is also extremely rare, with only 5,800 bottles produced per year. It is a so-called "cult wine" that you can brag about just by drinking it.

It will surely be a memorable taste. If you think it is delicious, please take that memory with you and go to Waiheke Island!

Recommended pairings

Please try pairing it with meat dishes.

Cabernet has a strong, full-bodied flavor, so we recommend it with flavorful game (venison, wild boar, etc.), lamb, and lamb steaks.

About the Winery "Destiny Bay Wines"

Destiny Bay

Destiny Bay Wines is a winery founded in 2000 on Waiheke Island in Auckland by the Spratts, immigrants from California.

Waiheke Island is one of New Zealand's leading resort areas, and is also known as the "Wine Island" because of the many wineries that produce high-quality Bordeaux blend wines.

Among them, Destiny Bay Wines is a winery that is widely known around the world.

Destiny Bay Wines

Since the winery was established, they have planted five Bordeaux varieties, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, and released their first vintage in 2005. That wine received a Parker score of 94+, the highest in New Zealand for a first vintage wine at the time.

What drew more attention from around the world was the Cape Mentelle competition, held in Western Australia in 2017, which determines the best Cabernet blend . In this competition, Destiny Bay Wines ' Magna Pramia 2013 won first place, beating out other Cabernet blends from around the world.

In recent years, Destiny Bay Wines has been ranked high every year in the New Zealand winery rankings published by The Real Review, led by Bob Campbell, a renowned New Zealand wine critic (1st place in 2021 and 2nd place in 2022).

On the other hand, the winery only produces a very small amount of wine, just 2,000 cases per year, and the wine is now known as a cult wine because it is difficult to obtain.

A unique way of making wine

As mentioned earlier, the wines produced by Destiny Bay Wines are

  • DESTINAE
  • MYSTAE
  • MAGNA PRAEMIA

There are only three types, all of which are "Bordeaux blend" wines made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

They are all made from the same grapes and there is no difference in the variety.

So what is the difference?

It's a difference in style (blend).

In red wine brewing, the grapes are fermented and then pressed to produce juice.

During this process, different types of juice are produced depending on the pressing stage: free-run juice that flows naturally from the grapes, first pressed juice , second to fourth deep pressed juice , etc.

At Destiny Bay Wines, each type of juice is aged separately and then blended differently to create each wine.

This is a very rare method of production even on a global scale.

Generally speaking, the first juice is fresher and purer. So you might think that the most expensive "Magna Primia" has a lot of first juice in it, but Destiny Bay Wines is the opposite.

Amazingly, "Destiny" contains a lot of the first juice (free-run juice).

That's what's so exciting about winemaking at Destiny Bay!

It is true that the first juice has a clean and clear taste, but it is the latter juice that has been pressed many times that actually has more body and complexity. Naturally, only a very small amount of this juice remains, making it a valuable commodity.

The rarity of these wines is reflected in their prices. "The quality is the same, but the blend ratios of the fruit juices used are different." I think it's rare to see a winery that makes wines this way, even around the world.

Auckland is, of course, New Zealand's largest city and an important wine producing region.

The main varieties grown are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, producing wines that are complex and elegant.

Within Auckland, Waiheke Island is famous, also known as the "Wine Island," and is home to full-bodied wines with rich, full-bodied flavors.
