Dry and hard, a step above SB

Clos Henri is a rare winery in New Zealand with French roots.

The Henri Bourgeois family has been making wine in the Loire region of France for ten generations. They are a representative producer of Sancerre, a famous wine-producing region.

The company expanded into New Zealand in 2000, and just like the original, it believes in "making wines that can only be made in that region," producing Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

This "Waimaunga" is a new cuvee that has been created by revamping the previous series composition.

The word derives from a division of the Ice Age in New Zealand.

The three glacial periods in New Zealand, from oldest to newest, are called the Waimaunga Glacier, the Waimea Glacier, and the Otira Glacier.

In other words, the wine was named after an extremely cold period that existed in New Zealand long ago.

New Zealand's topography and geology have been shaped by repeated glacial periods in the past, including the soil in which the vines are planted.

As mentioned above, Clos Henri believes in pursuing flavors that are unique to this land, so it seems logical that they chose to name their wine after the glacial period, which is essential when considering the formation of the land.

So, what does this "Clos Henri Waimaunga Sauvignon Blanc" taste like?

I'll try tasting it right away.

The first nose is lemon, with less tropical fruit than you might expect from a typical Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

There is also a slight smokiness to it. All the elements are not too flashy, giving a restrained impression.

The taste has a pleasant lemony acidity, a slight bitterness like the white pulp of lemons and oranges, and a hint of gooseberry. There is almost no sweetness.

The aftertaste is firm and mineral, and the aftertaste that lingers on the palate is almost as if it contains lime.

I would say it is a taut white wine with pronounced acidity, dry fruitiness and minerality.

The wine is made from grapes harvested from a single vineyard, with 85% fermented in stainless steel tanks with cultured yeast and 15% fermented with wild yeast in old French oak barrels.

It is then aged in barrels for over six months before being bottled.

This flavor is achieved by blending a clear, fruity wine with a complex, oak-aged wine in a well-balanced way and allowing the two to blend together.

What dish would make a good pairing?

  • Salad with chevre
  • Raw oysters with lime
  • Seafood Paella
  • Sour marinated summer vegetables

is.

I think this wine tastes even better when paired with food rather than drinking it on its own.

About the Winery "Clos Henri"

Clos Henri logo

Clos Henri is a winery owned by the Henri Bourgeois family, famous wine producers in Sancerre, Loire Valley, France.

Of all the places around the world, the Bourgeois family chose Marlborough, a wine-producing region in New Zealand, to create the wine of their dreams.

The wines they aim to produce in Marlborough are French-style, different from those produced by other New Zealand producers, producing textured, elegant wines that impress Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir fans around the world.

About Marlborough

Marlborough is the heart of New Zealand's wine region.

Marlborough has ideal natural conditions for grape growing, such as abundant sunshine and large temperature differences throughout the day, and more than 80% of New Zealand's wine is produced there.

Among them, Sauvignon Blanc, characterized by its crisp acidity and overflowing fruitiness, is produced in overwhelming quantities and is loved worldwide for its unique character. In addition, Pinot Noir, with its rich berry fruit flavor, is also popular among red wines.
