A dense and powerful Pinot with a rich structure
Matt Thomson, the owner of this winery, Blank Canvas, has been making wine in Marlborough since 1992 and is an expert who knows all about the characteristics of Marlborough.
His wife, Sophie Thomson, is an incredibly talented woman who was the first person in the Marlborough region to obtain the world's most difficult wine qualification, Master of Wine.
Among the blank canvas wines produced by this husband-and-wife team, this "Settlement Vineyard Pinot Noir" is the latest in a series of new releases.
While Blank Canvas has produced a variety of styles of Pinot Noir in the past, 2019 will be the first vintage to bear the Settlement Vineyard name.
The vineyard is located in Omaka, a gently rolling hilly area that receives ample sunlight within Marlborough.
The Pinot Noir from Settlement Vineyard is characterized by its high planting density.
This ensures that the roots of the vines are firmly planted deep underground.
A high percentage of hand-harvested grapes are used to express their complexity. (More than 50%) Whole-cluster fermentation is used.
Aged for 12 months in lightly toasted French oak barrels (35% new), then rested in tank for a further 3 months before bottling unfiltered.
The resulting wine was the "most tannic" of the Pinot Noirs they produced.
While it has the fruity flavor of cherries, you can also sense the nuances of stems from whole-cluster fermentation and the aroma of the barrel.
This Pinot is not too fruity, but has power and a solid structure, and is elegant overall.
This wine, with its unique flavor, could be said to be the culmination of the hard work of her husband, Matt, who knows the characteristics of Marlborough inside and out, and his wife, Sophie, whose knowledge of winemaking methods around the world is etched in her mind.
Of course, it has a high aging potential, and Cameron Douglas, a renowned New Zealand master sommelier, says that "this wine will be at its best until around 2030 or so."

Blank Canvas is a winery in Marlborough founded by winemaking consultant Matt Thomson and his wife Sophie.
Her husband, Matt, is a leading New Zealand winemaker, having won Winemaker of the Year at the 2008 International Wine Challenge, and his wife, Sophie, obtained the Master of Wine, the world's most difficult wine qualification, in 2021.
Their wines are made from the finest grapes grown in carefully selected vineyards and meticulously brewed using the finest techniques. In partnership with Sophie MW, Matt has put together over 20 years of extensive experience and knowledge, and this blank canvas is the result.
