Elegant single-vineyard Pinot
The name "Escalos" is the name of a fictional town that appears in the children's book "The Hobbit."
As you may know, New Zealand was the location for the film "The Hobbit." In the story, Escalos is depicted as the place where the elves obtained wine, so this vineyard is named in a playful way, associating it with the story.
The (real) Escalos vineyard is located in the Southern Valley, a relatively steeply sloping region of Marlborough, a major wine-producing region. The vines were planted on the dry, north-facing land that was cleared.
The vineyard is approximately one hectare in size. The soil is clayey. The large temperature difference between day and night makes it ideal for growing grapes. While most vineyards in Marlborough are irrigated, this vineyard is unusually dry-farmed.
The grapes are hand-harvested, 50% destemmed and 50% whole-cluster fermented, then aged for 12 months in French oak barrels (35% new).
After aging in barrels, it is left to rest in tanks for a further three months and then bottled unfiltered to preserve the flavour.
The resulting "Escalos Vineyard Pinot Noir" can be summed up in one word as a "Pinot that combines delicacy and power," as mentioned above.
Rose, ripe cherry, honey, rosemary, spiciness from the barrel, and lime-like minerality—these elements stimulate the nose and taste buds one after another.
It has many layers of charm and a very long finish.
The wine has a smooth astringency, but a rich, dense flavor.
Cameron Douglas, New Zealand's leading Master Sommelier, gave this wine a score of 97 out of 100 and described it as "a Grand Cru wine."
Drink it now to enjoy its combination of delicacy and power, but it also has the potential to age well.
After aging for 5 to 10 years, the tannins will become silkier and mature aromas of forest floor and truffles will emerge.
The screw cap means there's almost no risk of cork taint. It's likely to age slowly, so there's no need to rush to drink it.
This wine is delicious to drink now and is also perfect to save for future enjoyment.
I'm sure it would make a great anniversary gift.

It goes well with venison, duck, and lamb steaks.

Blank Canvas is a winery in Marlborough founded by winemaking consultant Matt Thomson and his wife Sophie.
Her husband, Matt, is a leading New Zealand winemaker, having won Winemaker of the Year at the 2008 International Wine Challenge, and his wife, Sophie, obtained the Master of Wine, the world's most difficult wine qualification, in 2021.
Their wines are made from the finest grapes grown in carefully selected vineyards and meticulously brewed using the finest techniques. In partnership with Sophie MW, Matt has put together over 20 years of extensive experience and knowledge, and this blank canvas is the result.
