In a survey of brands that New Zealanders trust, conducted by the New Zealand publishing company of the global magazine Reader's Digest, Whittaker's was chosen as the "most trustworthy brand." This is the 12th year in a row that this has been the case!
Popular chocolate manufacturer Whittaker's
Whittaker's is a confectionery company founded in Christchurch in 1896 by James Whittaker, a British immigrant.
Before moving to NZ, James Whittaker worked as a salesman for the British chocolate manufacturer Cadbury. Shortly after moving to NZ, he made chocolate at home and sold it by horse-drawn cart. Then, 15 years after the company was founded, it moved to Wellington, where his two sons joined the company. Whittaker's has been a family business from its founding to the present day.
In 1969, the company expanded and moved to Porirua, a suburb of the capital, where it continues to make chocolate in the "bean-to-bar" style. Bean-to-bar means that the entire process from the cocoa beans to the finished chocolate bar is thoroughly managed and produced in-house.
Whittaker's flagship product is the "Peanut Slab," a peanut-filled snack whose recipe hasn't changed since the 1950s. While protecting this traditional product, the company is constantly releasing new products, including luxury lines and collaborations with other manufacturers.
This chocolate was created in collaboration with Griffins, one of New Zealand's leading cookie manufacturers.
What is brand research?
The 24th annual brand survey was conducted by independent research firm Catalyst Consultancy & Research and polled 1,700 New Zealanders. Brands were split into 71 detailed categories.
The program covers not only New Zealand-made brands but brands from all over the world, so Japanese companies such as Toyota and Bridgestone are chosen for the car and tyre categories.
By the way, the wine category was awarded to "Oyster Bay." Villa Maria , which is available at Bokumo Wine, was also introduced as a candidate, although it was unfortunately not selected.

This time, Whittaker's was named number one in the confectionery category, as well as 'Most Trusted Brand' and 'Most Trusted New Zealand Brand'.
Experts say Whittaker's is loved for a reason
The company values its connections with chocolate-loving local community members and often incorporates customer feedback and ideas into its business strategies.

Currently, 30% of the products produced at Whittaker's are exported worldwide. In Japan, they are sold at import stores and online shops, so if you come across them, please give them a try. They are creamy but not too heavy, so even those of us who are used to eating Japanese chocolate will find them delicious.
