A fresh Pinot with a pleasant acidity

This bottle is recommended for those who are attracted to bright-colored Pinot Noir and Pinot Noir from cool climates .

There are several famous Pinot producing areas in New Zealand, but the Awatere Valley in Marlborough is known for producing wines that stand out for their clear acidity and crisp fruitiness . I think this Vavasour Pinot Noir also beautifully expresses the characteristics of this cool region.

Although Marlborough wines are generally referred to as such, their characteristics vary greatly depending on the sub-region.

Awatere is a place where the wind from the Pacific Ocean is strong. Even in midsummer, the sun shines but the air is cool. There is little rainfall and it is extremely dry. And there is a greater diurnal range (temperature difference between day and night) than in other sub-regions of Marlborough, so grapes that grow in the sunlight during the day retain nutrients firmly at night and ripen slowly.

The Pinot Noir grown in such a harsh yet blessed environment is free of unnecessary decoration, yet has depth. It is a wine with a truly "clear strength."

All the grapes used are from our own vineyards and hand-picked. Most of the grapes are de-stemmed and transferred to stainless steel tanks, while some are cold-soaked whole bunches. Fermented with wild yeast and carefully hand-stirred. After fermentation, the grapes are pressed on the skins and transferred to French oak barrels for aging. They undergo malolactic fermentation in the spring, and are blended and bottled at the end of summer.

The finished wine is...

The color is bright cherry red. The aroma is bright and juicy fruits such as cherry, strawberry, and plum, with a slight hint of toast and spice. When you put it in your mouth, the clean acidity tightens it up and blends with the fullness of the fruit. The aftertaste is pleasantly long and lingering with delicate tannins and a spicy finish.

The clean acidity makes it feel refreshing to drink, but it also has a complex richness. And it leaves a refreshing impression at the end. It's a truly sophisticated Pinot .

This wine can be enjoyed on its own, but it also pairs perfectly with food.

The recommended pairing is…

  • Linguine with chicken and oyster mushrooms in tomato sauce
  • Sauteed pork with ratatouille
  • Tuna and mushroom carpaccio
  • Grilled salmon with miso
  • Brie de Meaux + strawberry jam + white pepper

Give this a try. It's also delicious when chilled a little in the summer.

In recent years, the price of New Zealand Pinot Noir has been rising overall. However, Vavasour Pinot Noir is less than 4,000 yen for this quality, so I think it's great value for money !

It goes well with tomato-based dishes such as pasta with tomato sauce and ratatouille. It also goes well with fish dishes such as tuna carpaccio and miso-grilled salmon.

About the Winery "Vava Sour"

Vavasour is a pioneer in the Awatere Valley, a unique region in Marlborough, New Zealand.

In the 1980s, this area was considered unsuitable for winemaking due to its cool, dry climate, strong winds, and rocky soil. However, they were convinced that there was a special flavor that could only be produced in this "difficult land," and they decided to take on the challenge. They were successful, and now Awatere Valley is recognized worldwide as one of New Zealand's leading wine producing regions.

Tastes brought about by unique terroir (soil)

It is the Awatere land itself that characterizes their wines.

The cool climate and large day-night temperature differences allow the grapes to ripen slowly, resulting in bright acidity and deep flavors. The rocky, well-drained soil gives the wine a distinct minerality that enhances its flavor.

The harsh conditions unique to this region give the wine delicate and complex flavors.

Attention to detail and evolving winemaking

Their vineyards are divided into over 100 small plots, each individually managed, harvested and transformed into wine through a meticulous winemaking process.

By combining traditional methods with modern techniques, such as natural fermentation using wild yeasts, whole-cluster fermentation, and high-solids fermentation, we are able to faithfully and fully express the individuality of the land.

The brand has earned worldwide acclaim for its exceptional quality, but refrains from putting too much stock in awards and critical acclaim.

Because they value the essential quality of the wine and loyalty to the land above all else.

This approach resonates strongly with wine lovers who value authenticity and reliability.

The presence of creators with a deep understanding of the land

Winemaker Stu Marfell was born and raised in the Awatere Valley and understands the unique characteristics of this land better than anyone.

His winemaking is based on working closely with the land and respecting its individuality, and he continues to evolve and innovate through meticulous research into the microbial environment and soil characteristics of the fields.

The wines he makes are a unique blend of his love for the land and outstanding technique.

Each bottle of Vavasour wine is packed with respect for the land, the passion of the challengers, and the meticulous attention to detail of the craftsmen.

About Marlborough

Marlborough is the heart of New Zealand's wine region.

Marlborough has ideal natural conditions for grape growing, such as abundant sunshine and large temperature differences throughout the day, and more than 80% of New Zealand's wine is produced there.

Among them, Sauvignon Blanc, characterized by its crisp acidity and overflowing fruitiness, is produced in overwhelming quantities and is loved worldwide for its unique character. In addition, Pinot Noir, with its rich berry fruit flavor, is also popular among red wines.
