This is Otago's finest Pinot

We're always introducing exciting new wines, but this time we're introducing some wines that will really get you dancing after tasting them.

Personally, I love Pinot Noir, but there are many different types of Pinot.

There are rich ones, delicate ones, bright ones, deep ones, and approachable ones...among them, the one I love is the "light, slightly dark, and deep" type of Pinot.

Finally, this wine finally arrived. I just couldn't help but dance.

The producer, Terra Sancta, is based in Central Otago, the southernmost wine producing region of the South Island.

This is a famous Pinot producing region, producing many wines such as Felton Road and Prophets Rock, which cost over 10,000 yen.

Terra Sancta's winery and vineyards are located in Bannockburn, a subregion known for its warm and dry climate.

The basic line of Pinot Noir they produce is "Bannockburn Pinot Noir", named after the subregion.

The higher-end cuvées are named after vineyards.

This "Single Beach Pinot Noir" is made entirely from grapes grown at Single Beach.

The word "shingle" here is not "single" but "shingle". It means small stones or pebbles. Beach can mean the coast, but it can also refer to the riverbank.

So Shnigle Beach is a "small stony river bank field" close to the banks of the Kawarau River.

The soil is schist and limestone, and there is plenty of sunshine, allowing the area to take full advantage of early sunrises and late sunsets.

The grapes are harvested in May (which is like harvesting in November in the Northern Hemisphere). The grapes are aged for a long time and then fermented with wild yeast. Only a small amount of sulfur dioxide is added before bottling.

Now, here are my impressions from tasting it.

The exterior is bright , but not too dark for a Pinot that gets plenty of sunshine.

The nose is dominated by aromas of both red and black berries, plums and spices .

The moment you put it in your mouth you can immediately appreciate the beauty of this wine.

The first taste is the fruity flavor typical of New Zealand, followed by nuances of nutmeg , clove and humus . It gives the impression of being in the forest, feeling both ripe fruit and wet soil.

This is a truly luscious flavour that seems to represent the perfect Central Otago Pinot Noir.

Several times a year I come across wines that are difficult to describe in words, and this is one such wine.

It's a wine that is so delicious that you'll want to drink it on its own, but if you want to pair it with food, it's best to pair it with steaks or stews made from high-quality meats such as duck, beef, or lamb. Balsamic sauces or red wine sauces will further enhance the wine's compatibility.

Please enjoy this dish in a relaxed atmosphere on a special day.

About the Winery "Terra Sancta"

Terra Sancta is Central Otago's fourth established winery.

Founders Sarah Elliott and Mark Weldon recognised that each of their four vineyards, including Sancta, first planted in 1988, had different soil and site characteristics and the potential to produce excellent wine.

The current head brewer is Andrew Keenlyside, who has experience working in California and New Zealand.

Bannockburn, where Terra Sancta is located, is the only GI in Central Otago. The climate is as dry as a desert, allowing the grapes to ripen healthily while retaining their acidity. The north-facing vineyards and three mountain ranges also provide an ideal environment for grape growing.

The signature Sancta Vineyard was established in 1991 and is Bannockburn's first vineyard. The site and conditions of this vineyard are excellent, producing complex wines that can be aged for a long time.

Their wines have received acclaim from notable critics such as Bob Campbell and James Suckling.

About Central Otago

Central Otago, the southernmost region in the country, is known as a famous Pinot Noir producing area and is called one of the "three major Pinot Noir producing areas in the world" along with Burgundy and Oregon.

In addition to Pinot Noir, we are focusing on growing aromatic white grapes. This region is the only one of New Zealand's wine producing regions with a semi-continental climate, characterized by large daily temperature differences, coolness, and extreme dryness.

The region is also home to a wealth of small wineries, and winery tours based in the scenic town of Queenstown are popular.
