A fragrant and soft Merlot blend
Waiheke Island is one of New Zealand's leading resort destinations and is also known as the Wine Island because of its production of premium wines.
The warm, dry island has a high summer temperature of over 30°C (unusual for cool New Zealand), but it can get chilly at night, with extreme temperature differences.
In addition, the soil is poor and well-drained, so grapes grown in harsh conditions have a strong, concentrated flavor.
The wines produced here, both red and white, are full-bodied, with a rich, full-bodied flavor that is a specialty of the island.
"TE MOTU" has a relatively long history on Waiheke Island, with the first trees planted in 1989. It is located in the Onetangi Valley, a valley located almost in the center of the island. It was founded by the Dunleavy family.
The winery was founded with the goal of producing Bordeaux-style wines that could be aged for a long time, mainly using Merlot and Cabernet, and the first wine was released in 1993.
Since then, it has gained a high reputation both domestically and internationally as a winery that consistently produces high-quality wines while keeping production numbers low on Waiheke Island.
"The Family" is the entry-level range of TE MOTU, and the 2017 vintage is composed of 42% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 29% Cabernet Franc.
When poured into a glass, the aroma of fragrant cocoa and chocolate rises, followed by the flavor of dark berries .
The taste is very soft and smooth on the tongue. The sweet roundness of the ripe Merlot is complemented by a hint of menthol from the Cabernet .
It also has an animalistic nuance like tanned leather , which is characteristic of aged wine, and the roasted aroma of the barrel that was first felt returns in the aftertaste.
The wine is rich in flavor, has mild tannins , and has no harsh aftertaste, resulting in a very mellow-tasting wine.
This wine goes well with roast beef , beef stewed in tomato sauce , and pork chops .
Additionally, if you want to pair the wine with its roasted aroma, charcoal-grilled meat would be a good choice.
Incidentally, New Zealand's most influential Master of Wine, Bob Campbell, gave this wine a score of 93 out of 100.

Te Motu is a winery on Waiheke Island, one of the "Wine Islands" accessible by ferry from Auckland.
