Rich Gewurz with a floral scent
Shangri-La = utopia. The label features a landscape painting of Nelson by a New Zealand artist. It features a rich floral aroma, a full-bodied taste, and a long-lasting aftertaste.
It goes well with Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, especially with spicy dishes or dishes with coriander. Try it with spring rolls!
"Shangri-La" means utopia.
The wine was named after the Nelson region where it is produced, which is said to be the place New Zealanders most want to live after retirement.
Nelson, a port city on the north coast of New Zealand's South Island, is a very scenic wine-producing region surrounded by lush greenery and abundant nature. The label features a landscape painting of Nelson by a New Zealand artist, adding a touch of elegance to the wine.
Gewurztraminer, which is said to have originated in Germany, is a popular grape variety in New Zealand as well.
The characteristic of this variety is the "lychee scent." However, this wine is a little different, with a floral scent reminiscent of white flowers and roses.
It has nuances of pear, peach, and plum, as well as spices such as cloves and ginger, making it a very drinkable drink. You can enjoy a very complex and deep flavor.
The finish has a slight bitterness and also a touch of sweetness.
This is a very good wine with a long finish and a very satisfying sip.
As mentioned above, this wine has a slightly different nuance from the typical "lychee-flavored Gewurztraminer," but I hope it will teach you that "there is a Gewurz like this too."
Recommended pairings
It pairs well with Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese dishes that are spicy or garnished with coriander.
Try pairing it with chili shrimp, sweet and sour pork, hot and sour soup, tom yum goong, pad thai, spring rolls, and banh mi.
It also goes well with curry-flavored dishes, such as curry-flavored French fries and the German dish currywurst (sausage topped with curry powder and ketchup).
This is a wine with a striking aroma, so try pairing it with punchy spicy dishes rather than delicate Japanese cuisine.
About the Winery "Brackenbrook"
Blackenbrook is a boutique winery located in the Nelson region on the north coast of New Zealand's South Island.
This region, also known as "Sunny Nelson," boasts the most abundant sunshine of all New Zealand's wine producing regions and produces highly aromatic wines.
The owner, Daniel, studied viticulture and brewing at the University of Lincoln, before gaining experience in Austria, Germany, France (Alsace), and other countries, and in New Zealand served as chief wine at the prestigious Seyfried winery, also in Nelson.
He and his wife and partner, Ursula, spent two years searching for the perfect location before settling on their current location.
At Brackenbrook, the fruit is carefully grown in sustainable vineyards and fermented in a winery designed to make the most of the gravity flow system (a method of using gravity to move the wine during the fermentation process).
Also, pay attention to the label. This "Shangri-La" art series uses an artist's landscape painting of Nelson.
The painting used for the Gewurztraminer is by landscape artist Michel Bellamy, who used acrylic paint to depict a view of the port city from Nelson Hill.
This is a distinctive label unique to Nelson, a city famous for its art scene, with cafes and galleries dotted throughout the city.
About Nelson
Nelson is located in the northern part of the South Island and is affectionately known as "Sunny Nelson" due to the extremely long hours of sunshine throughout the year.
This relatively small wine region is mostly made up of small wineries known as boutique wineries.
Taking advantage of the abundant sunshine, aromatic white wines such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Gris are mainly produced. Pinot Noir, which has a strong fruity flavor, is popular for red wine. Nelson is also famous for producing hops and fruits.
