Rare Chardonnay is truly creamy
Scout is a boutique winery in Central Otago, New Zealand's southernmost wine region. This Chardonnay, crafted by young female winemaker Sarah Adamson, is remarkably delicate and mellow.
This wine pairs well with all cream-based dishes, such as salmon with cream sauce, potato gratin, and bacon quiche.
About Scout Wines
Established in 2017, Scout Wines is run by Sarah Adamson, who has over 13 years of winemaking experience across the globe.
Since 2004, she has been involved in wine regions worldwide, traveling to various locations to learn and understand great wines, working with many winemakers, and being greatly influenced by their winemaking styles, flavors, and philosophies.
Sarah's winery, Scout Wines, emphasizes adapting old-world wine styles to contemporary tastes.
They particularly leverage the beautiful fruit and interesting vineyard plots nurtured in Central Otago, fermenting flavorful wines without relying on additives or technology.
White wines are whole-bunch pressed and fermented with wild yeasts, then aged on their lees. Red wines are hand-harvested and fermented with wild yeasts. Maceration is lengthy, but plunging is kept to a minimum to avoid over-extraction. Various sizes of French oak barrels are used for aging, with a very low percentage of new oak, preserving the purity of the fruit.
The winery's name is inspired by Harper Lee's masterpiece, "To Kill a Mockingbird," and the protagonist, Jean Louise Finch's spirit of "questioning and observation" is reflected in their winemaking.
About the Central Otago Region
Central Otago, the southernmost wine region in New Zealand, is renowned for its Pinot Noir, and along with Burgundy and Oregon, it is known as one of the "world's three great Pinot Noir regions."
Beyond Pinot Noir, the region also focuses on cultivating aromatic white grape varieties. This area is New Zealand's only semi-continental climate, characterized by large diurnal temperature variations, cool temperatures, and very dry conditions.
It is also a treasure trove of small-scale wineries, and winery tours based out of the scenic town of Queenstown are popular.
