Supple, Cool-Climate Pinot

About the Vineyard

"Emma's Block" is located on the shores of Lake Wanaka in Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand.

The name "Emma's" comes from Emma, the grandmother of the current owner, Nick Mills. It was given to this block in honor of her name being passed down through the Mills family lineage. Every year, this block produces a relatively delicate Pinot within Rippon.

The soil has a unique structure, with layers of clay deposited on an ancient lakebed running through fine schist gravel. It is the closest block to the lake within Rippon.

The gentle east-facing slope receives morning light but little afternoon sun. This environment, where temperatures do not rise too high, is the secret to its delicate fruitiness.

Winemaking

Hand-harvested from old vines (mature vines) grown biodynamically. Fermented using only wild yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Aged for 16 months in 225L French oak barrels (new to 4 years old). Undergoes natural malolactic fermentation and is bottled unfiltered.

Tasting Notes

The color is a clear, pale ruby red.

The aroma begins with floral nuances reminiscent of violet and rose, expanding to cherry, currant, and a hint of smoke. As it opens in the glass over time, notes of citrus peel and herbs also emerge, creating a complex and delicate aromatic world.

On the palate, it has a supple and flowing texture. The fruit profile is refined, interwoven with floral and mineral nuances. Silky tannins and firm acidity form the backbone, leading to a long finish.

This wine emphasizes elegance over power. It is beautiful to drink now but also has the potential to be enjoyed well beyond 2035.

James Suckling 97 points (2021 VT), Wine Advocate 95 points.

Pairing Suggestions

The delicate texture of this wine pairs well with dishes that highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients. Sautéed chicken thigh (with red wine sauce), pork shio-koji grilled with white miso, and grilled duck and mushrooms would be excellent matches.

Complex cheeses such as aged Mimolette or Comté also make good partners.

About Rippon Winery

Rippon is located on the western shore of Lake Wanaka in Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand, overlooking the Southern Alps. It has been owned by the Mills family for four generations since 1912 and is an indispensable presence in the history of winemaking in this region.

Winemaking began in 1974 when founder Rolfe Mills experimentally planted over 30 varieties of grapes.

Serious cultivation began in the 1980s, and the first wine was released in 1989.

Winemaker: Nick Mills

The winery is currently led by Nick Mills, the founder's son. He was originally a national champion in freestyle skiing but, due to an injury, traveled to France and gained experience at prestigious wineries such as DRC and Nicolas Potel.

He returned to Rippon in 2002 and took over the winemaking.

Terroir, Viticulture, and Vinification

The vineyards are in a cool continental climate, characterized by volcanic schist soils. This soil contributes minerality and concentrated flavors to the wine.

Furthermore, since the vineyards have not been affected by phylloxera, "own-rooted" vines are cultivated without grafting. Many old vines planted in the 1970s are present, and they are grown without irrigation, solely with homemade compost.

Organic farming was adopted in 1995, and biodynamic methods were introduced in 2002. In winemaking, wild yeasts are used, and a style of minimal human intervention is maintained.

Grape Varieties and Accolades

The main varieties currently produced are Pinot Noir, Gamay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Osteiner, totaling seven varieties.

Pinot Noir, in particular, is highly regarded and is sometimes called "the DRC of New Zealand." It achieved the highest score ever for a New Zealand red wine in Wine Advocate in 2008 and was named the inaugural "New Zealand Pinot of the Year" by Wine Spectator in 2010, establishing its international reputation.

About Central Otago

Central Otago, the southernmost wine region in New Zealand, is renowned for its Pinot Noir and is considered one of the "world's three great Pinot Noir regions," alongside Burgundy and Oregon.

Beyond Pinot Noir, efforts are focused on cultivating aromatic white grape varieties. This region is the only semi-continental climate among New Zealand's wine regions, characterized by large diurnal temperature variations, cool temperatures, and very dry conditions.

It is also a treasure trove of small wineries, and winery tours based in the scenic town of Queenstown are popular.
