A gem of a Pinot from the southernmost tip of New Zealand
Prophet's Rock is particularly famous in Central Otago, the southernmost wine-producing region of New Zealand. This is the winery's flagship wine. The aroma is rich. The tannins are silky.
A lamb or venison steak with mushrooms is a perfect match, as is a duck dish, or a beef fillet Rossini style.
About the Winery "Prophet's Rock"
Prophet's Rock is a talented winery based in Central Otago that was established in 1999.
The head winemaker is Paul Pujol, a New Zealander of French descent.
He began his career at Seresin Estate, known as a pioneer of natural wine in Marlborough, and then gained experience in Languedoc, Saint-Seine and Alsace in France, including serving as head winemaker at a winery in Alsace.
He then moved to Lemelson Vineyards, an organic wine producer in Oregon, where he produced 12 wines during his time there, eight of which received Wine Spectator scores of 90 or above.
He then returned to New Zealand and took up the post of winemaker at Prophet's Rock. He has been praised by the renowned British wine critic Jancis Robinson as one of the top five winemakers expected to one day lead the world of wine.
Prophet's Rock's two vineyards are located in Bendigo, on the eastern side of Lake Dunstan.
One of the vineyards is the "Home Vineyard", which has a rare mix of soil including schist, clay and limestone, and the other is the "Rocky Point Vineyard", which has a rocky soil.
Prophet's Rock aims to create wine that embodies the essence of New Zealand nature to the fullest.
They practice thorough canopy management (trimming leaves and stems and controlling tree vigor) and do not use any fertilizer; instead, the grapes are grown using only the nutrients absorbed by the roots, which extend more than three meters underground.
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, without the use of machinery, and fermentation is carried out using only natural yeasts.
Its high quality is renowned worldwide, and more than 15 of the top 50 restaurants in the worldwide Michelin Guide use Prophet's Rock wines.
