A soft Bordeaux blend
Due to New Zealand's cool climate, Pinot Noir is more prevalent than Bordeaux varieties when it comes to red wine.
However, some producers have persevered and have created affordable Bordeaux blends.
One of them is Seyfried Estate in Nelson, South Island.
Seyfried Estate is a winery run by Nelson pioneer Herman Seyfried.
Their value brand, Old Coach Road, is a popular series in New Zealand known for its fruity, approachable wines.
This "Malbec Cabernet Franc Merlot" is their ambitious creation that makes it possible to create a Bordeaux blend even in the cool South Island.
The grapes are grown in Nelson's Clover Road and Brightwater vineyards, located a few kilometres from the coastline, both of which are protected from the strong southerly winds by the Richmond Range to the south.
Both vineyards also have a lot of rocks and pebbles, which helps the soil retain heat even in cool climates, which helps the grapes ripen.
By the way, this is the Seyfried Estate cellar door (a tasting and direct sales outlet). There are roses planted right next to it.
"Roses get sick before grapes, so we use roses as disease sensors," said a winery representative.
The staff at the cellar door were very kind and explained everything about each wine.

Tasting Notes
The color is subdued and has a reddish tone.
The aroma is an exquisite blend of sour red fruits like raspberries and floral nuances reminiscent of violets , with the spice of nutmeg and cloves .
The first thing you taste is a soft, bright impression. Fruity flavors like cherries and plums spread across your palate. The astringency is subtle , with a hint of spice remaining in the aftertaste.
It is not a traditional Bordeaux type that is rich and astringent, but rather a refreshing Bordeaux blend with a fruity flavor and clarity.
Recommended pairings
This wine pairs well with the following dishes:
- Prosciutto, mushroom and arugula salad
- Tuna tartare
- Roast Chicken (with rosemary and berry sauce)
- Nikujaga (meat and potato stew)
- Pork ginger stir-fry
It can be paired with a fairly wide range of dishes, but to enhance the pairing, it is important that the seasoning is not too strong in order to balance out the light wine.
Beef is good, but it pairs better with milder chicken or pork dishes.
About the Seyfried Estate Winery
Seifried Estate is a winery founded by the Seifrieds, immigrants from Austria. They began cultivating vineyards in the 1970s and are now known as the oldest winery in the Nelson region. They specialize in Austrian and German varieties, which are the breeding grounds of their native Austrians, and have won numerous international awards.
About Nelson
Nelson is located in the northern part of the South Island and is affectionately known as "Sunny Nelson" due to the extremely long hours of sunshine it enjoys throughout the year.
This relatively small wine-producing region is mostly made up of small wineries known as boutique wineries.
Taking advantage of the abundant sunshine, aromatic white wines such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Gris are mainly produced. Pinot Noir, with its robust fruit flavor, is popular among red wines. Nelson is also famous for its hops and fruit production.
