Neudorf: Restrained Pinot Noir from Natural Production
Neudorf, dedicated to natural production methods, crafts a restrained style where fruitiness doesn't dominate. It possesses the distinctive earthy nuances of Moutere and a supple texture.
This wine, with its powdery tannins, pairs well with leaner meats and mushrooms. Duck, lamb, and tuna with mushrooms are especially recommended.
About Neudorf Vineyards
Neudorf Vineyards is a family-owned winery located in Upper Moutere, Nelson.
It was founded in 1978 when Tim Finn and Judy Finn planted grapevines in the Nelson region, before it developed into a wine-producing area. They designated Upper Moutere as a "special place," built a home, and cultivated the land. They named the winery "Neudorf," which means "new village" in German, and began their winemaking journey.
They monitor the grapes in as natural a state as possible and add nothing unnecessary during the winemaking process. They adopted sustainable farming methods early on, producing wine with consideration for the natural environment.
In addition to their own vineyards, they use grapes from two contract vineyards. By utilizing grapes from nearby vineyards with different soil compositions, they create wines that showcase the unique character and diversity of the land.
Neudorf gained international recognition in 1993 when it won the Chardonnay category at the "World's Best Wine Tasting" competition in the UK, suddenly bringing it global renown.
In recent years, their Pinot Noir has also received high acclaim. In 2009, they were named "New Zealand's Best Producer" in the Tom Stevenson Report in the UK. Additionally, Bob Campbell MW described their 2014 Moutere Chardonnay as "the finest white Burgundy" and awarded it a perfect score of 100 points, praising it highly.
Currently, the Finns remain as owners, and their vision is carried on by the winemakers who have succeeded them.
About the Nelson Region
"Nelson" is located in the northern part of the South Island and is affectionately known as "Sunny Nelson" due to its exceptionally long annual sunshine hours.
This relatively small region is predominantly home to small-scale wineries, often referred to as boutique wineries.
Leveraging abundant sunshine, they primarily produce Chardonnay and aromatic white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Gris. Among red wines, Pinot Noir with rich fruit flavors is popular. Nelson is also famous as a region for hops and fruit.
