For an opera singer, the "high note" is the most captivating element. Misha, the daughter of a singer, named this wine after it because it is a work of great confidence. This wine has an aging potential of over five years.
This wine, with its gentleness and savory notes, pairs well with pan-seared chicken or pork. It also goes perfectly with soy-based meat dishes like chikuzen-ni (simmered chicken and vegetables) or braised pork belly.
About the Winery: Misha's Vineyard
Misha’s Vineyard is a winery located in the Central Otago region of New Zealand's South Island. Although it is a young winery that released its first vintage in 2008, Misha’s wines have garnered attention from many critics and earned high acclaim.
When I visited New Zealand some time ago, I had the opportunity to tour the Misha’s Vineyard estate.
Owners Andy and Misha Wilkinson both had careers at global IT companies in Singapore. Long harboring a dream to one day make their own wine, they decided to begin winemaking in 2001.
Aiming to create an "elegant Pinot Noir" in a cool climate, they narrowed their search down to Central Otago, New Zealand, and spent two long years selecting the perfect site for their vineyard.
They found it on the banks of Lake Dunstan in Bendigo. The vineyard sits on steep, rugged, and lean soil.
The land where they started their winery was at the heart of the gold rush in the late 1860s, and remnants of that era still remain there.
Misha told me that she loves this place, including its history.
Additionally, Misha's mother was an opera singer, and Misha herself aspired to be a ballerina from a young age. All the titles of the wines they release are inspired by music and theater.
About the Region: Central Otago
Located at the southern tip of the country, "Central Otago" is renowned as a premier region for Pinot Noir, often referred to alongside Burgundy and Oregon as one of the "world's top three Pinot Noir regions."
Beyond Pinot Noir, the region focuses on the cultivation of aromatic white grapes. It is the only area in New Zealand with a semi-continental climate, characterized by significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, as well as cool and very dry conditions.
It is also a treasure trove of small-scale wineries, and winery tours based in the picturesque town of Queenstown are very popular.
