A Pinot with Complex Harmonies
“Cantata” refers not merely to a “song,” but to a complex “vocal composition.” This Pinot possesses a layered flavor profile, leaving a dense impression. The tannins are soft, leading to a pleasantly bitter finish.
Lamb and beef are the best matches; it pairs well with both sautéed and braised preparations. It also goes well with rich cream-based pastas or gratins.
About the Winery: Misha’s Vineyard
Misha’s Vineyard is a winery located in the Central Otago region of New Zealand's South Island. Although it is still a young winery—having released its first vintage in 2008—Misha’s wines have garnered significant attention and high praise from numerous critics.
When I visited New Zealand some time ago, I had the opportunity to tour the Misha’s Vineyard estate.
Owners Andy and Misha Wilkinson previously worked for a global IT company in Singapore. Having long held a dream of making their own wine, they decided in 2001 to begin their winemaking journey.
With a desire to “craft an elegant Pinot Noir” in a cool climate, they focused their search on New Zealand’s Central Otago, spending two long years selecting the perfect site for their vineyard.
They settled on a spot in Bendigo, on the shores of Lake Dunstan. The vineyard is situated on extremely steep terrain with hard, lean soil.
The land where they started their winery was at the heart of the late 1860s gold rush, and remnants of that era can still be found there today.
Misha mentioned that she loved the site, partly because of its historical significance.
Furthermore, Misha’s mother was an opera singer, and Misha herself aspired to be a ballerina from a young age. All the wines they release are given subtitles related to music and the theater.
About the Region: Central Otago
As the southernmost wine region in the country, “Central Otago” is renowned as a premier Pinot Noir producer, often cited alongside Burgundy and Oregon as one of the “world’s top three Pinot Noir regions.”
Beyond Pinot Noir, the region focuses on the cultivation of aromatic white grapes. It is the only wine region in New Zealand with a semi-continental climate, characterized by significant diurnal temperature variation, a cool climate, and very dry conditions.
It is also a treasure trove of small-scale wineries, and winery tours based out of the scenic town of Queenstown are quite popular.
