Dress Circle = "The Best Seats." This slightly dry Pinot Gris is characterized by pear-like flavors, rich umami, and a mineral finish.
This wine pairs well with a wide range of dishes. It is particularly well-suited to light meat dishes such as salted pork, chicken breast salad, and boiled dumplings.
About the Winery "Misha’s Vineyard"
Misha’s Vineyard is a winery located in the Central Otago region of New Zealand's South Island. Although it is a young winery that released its first vintage in 2008, Misha’s wines have attracted attention from many critics and earned high praise.
When I visited New Zealand some time ago, I had the opportunity to tour the Misha’s Vineyard estate.
Owners Andy and Misha Wilkinson both had careers at global IT companies in Singapore. Long harboring a dream of "making their own wine one day," they decided to begin winemaking in 2001.
Determined to "create elegant Pinot Noir" in a cool climate, they narrowed their search down to Central Otago, New Zealand, and spent two long years selecting the perfect land for their vineyard.
They found it on the shores of Lake Dunstan in Bendigo. The vineyard is located on very steep, rugged, and lean terrain.
The land where they began their winemaking journey was also the heart of the gold rush in the late 1860s, and remnants of that history can still be found there today.
Misha mentioned that she loved this place, in part because of that history.
Additionally, Misha's mother was an opera singer, and Misha herself aspired to be a ballerina from a young age. All the wines they release have subtitles related to music and theater.
About the Region: Central Otago
The southernmost wine region in the country, "Central Otago," is renowned as a premier area for Pinot Noir and is considered one of the "world's top three Pinot Noir regions" alongside Burgundy and Oregon.
Beyond Pinot Noir, the region focuses on cultivating aromatic white grape varieties. It is the only region in New Zealand with a semi-continental climate, characterized by large diurnal temperature ranges, cool temperatures, and very dry conditions.
It is also a treasure trove of small-scale wineries, and winery tours based in the scenic town of Queenstown are very popular.
