Dress Circle = the best seats in the house. This slightly dry Pinot Gris is characterized by pear-like flavors, rich umami, and a lingering minerality.
This wine pairs well with a wide range of dishes. It is especially good with light meat dishes such as salt-cured pork, chicken breast salad, and boiled dumplings.
About the winery, Misha's Vineyard
Misha's Vineyard is a winery located in the Central Otago region of New Zealand's South Island. Although it is a relatively young winery with its first release in 2008, Misha's wines have attracted attention from many critics and received high praise.
When I visited New Zealand previously, I had the opportunity to tour Misha's Vineyard.
Owners Andy and Misha Wilkinson previously worked for a global IT company in Singapore. They had long harbored a dream of making their own wine one day, and in 2001, they decided to embark on winemaking.
Wishing to produce elegant Pinot Noir in a cool climate, they narrowed their search to Central Otago, New Zealand, and spent two long years selecting the perfect vineyard site.
The chosen location was on the shores of Lake Dunstan in Bendigo. The vineyard has a very steep topography, and the soil was hard and poor.
This land, where winemaking began, was the epicenter of the gold rush in the late 1860s, and remnants of that era still remain.
Misha said that she especially liked this place for its historical significance.
Furthermore, Misha's mother was an opera singer, and Misha herself aspired to be a ballerina from a young age. All the wines they produce are subtitled with names related to music and theater.
About the Central Otago Region
Central Otago, the southernmost wine region in the country, is known as a renowned producer of Pinot Noir, and is sometimes called one of the "world's three great Pinot Noir regions," alongside Burgundy and Oregon.
Beyond Pinot Noir, the region focuses on cultivating aromatic white grapes. Central Otago is New Zealand's only wine region with a semi-continental climate, characterized by large diurnal temperature variations, cool temperatures, and very dry conditions.
It is also a treasure trove of small-scale wineries, and winery tours based in the picturesque town of Queenstown are popular.
