Voluminous Sauvignon

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is primarily characterized by distinct citrus and tropical fruit aromas, along with herbal and "cut grass" notes.
The overall impression is one of strong fruit flavors and a refreshing, clean herbal quality.
It is said that New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc possesses a unique character completely different from those of other countries.
However, this distinct character, to be precise, belongs not to "New Zealand-produced" but to "Marlborough, New Zealand-produced" wines.
While many wines from Marlborough, the largest producing region, exhibit the characteristics mentioned above, other regions also produce Sauvignon Blanc wines that don't necessarily fit this mold.
The "Main Divide" Sauvignon Blanc introduced here is from "North Canterbury," slightly outside that mold.
North Canterbury is located on the same South Island as Marlborough but is characterized by a cooler and drier climate compared to Marlborough.
Upon tasting, the difference is clear.
Breaking it down by the characteristics typical of Marlborough wines:
- Citrus and tropical fruit aromas like those from Marlborough
→ This wine also has them clearly - Herbal and cut grass nuances like those from Marlborough
→ This wine also has them clearly - A clean and refreshing sensation
→ This is where it clearly differs
This was my impression.
Main Divide Sauvignon Blanc, rather than being simply refreshing, has a firmly dense flavor.
Upon tasting, a lime-like citrus flavor with a beautiful acidity and the slight bitterness of orange peel immediately emerge.
Afterward, a thyme-like herbal aroma passes through the nose, while simultaneously leaving a viscous, almost oily impression.
Unlike the relatively light and easy-drinking image of Marlborough wines, this can be described as a white wine with a strong, full body, a long finish, and a voluminous quality in each sip.
The expression "the wine's center of gravity is lower" also seems applicable.
For food pairings, heavier dishes like fish, chicken, or pork would be a better fit than light appetizers.
In particular, seafood + oil dishes such as shrimp ajillo and vongole bianco pair well.
It also goes well with chicken cutlets, pork saute, and sausages.
Please enjoy it as an accompaniment to a hearty main dish.
About the Winery "Main Divide"

Main Divide is the second label of "Pegasus Bay," a prestigious winery representing Canterbury.
Using grapes sourced from various growers throughout Waipara Valley and their own grapes, the winemaking is handled by the Pegasus Bay team.

A distinctive feature of Main Divide is that, in addition to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, they also produce Bordeaux blend red wines, which are rare in the South Island. All their wines are fruity yet possess a solid complexity.

"Main Divide" is the nickname for the "Southern Alps," the mountain range that runs through New Zealand's South Island. The name reflects the cool, pure climate of the South Island and embodies the meaning of wines that express the individuality of each region and variety.
About the Region Canterbury/Waipara
"Canterbury/Waipara" is located on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island and is characterized by a cool and dry climate.
North Canterbury, where the country's largest plains spread out, is also one of the world's leading lamb production regions, and the scattered wineries offer a variety of grape varietals.
"Waipara," which can be visited on a day trip from Christchurch, produces premium wines such as Riesling and Pinot Noir and is also a popular tourist destination.
