A hearty Sauvignon

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is characterised by its distinct aromas of citrus and tropical fruits, as well as herbs and cut grass.

The overall image is one of strong fruit flavors and a refreshing herbal sensation.

It is said that Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand has a completely different character from that of wines from other countries.

However, to be precise, this unique character is not something that is "Made in New Zealand," but rather something that is "Made in Marlborough, New Zealand."

Marlborough, the largest producing region, produces many Sauvignon Blanc wines with the characteristics described above, but other producing regions also produce Sauvignon Blanc wines that do not necessarily fit into that category.

The Sauvignon Blanc we are introducing this time, "Main Divide," is from North Canterbury, which goes a little outside of that category.

North Canterbury is located on the same South Island as Marlborough, but is cooler and drier than Marlborough.

When you taste them, the difference is clear.

If we classify Marlborough based on its distinctive features...

  • Aromas of citrus and tropical fruits like those from Marlborough are also present in this wine.
  • Nuances of herbs and cut grass like those from Marlborough - this wine also has them.
  • Refreshing and cool feeling
    → This is clearly different

This is the impression I got.

Main Divide Sauvignon Blanc is not so much refreshing as it is dense and full-bodied.

When you put it in your mouth, the first thing that hits you is the citrus flavor of lime with a clean acidity and the slightly bitter taste of orange peel.

Afterwards, a herbal scent reminiscent of thyme fills your nose, while leaving a sticky, oily impression.

Unlike the image of Marlborough wines, which are relatively light and easy to drink, this is a white wine with a solid body, a long finish, and a sense of volume in each sip.

I think the expression " the wine has a low center of gravity" is also appropriate.

It would go better with heavier dishes such as fish, chicken, or pork rather than light appetizers.

It goes particularly well with seafood and oil dishes such as shrimp ajillo and vongole bianco.

It also goes well with chicken cutlet, pork saute, sausage, etc.

Be sure to try it as a side dish to your main dish.

About the Main Divide Winery

Main Divide logo

Main Divide is the second brand of Pegasus Bay, a prestigious winery representing Canterbury.

The wine is made using grapes sourced from growers across the Waipara Valley and its own grapes, and is vinified by the team at Pegasus Bay.

Pegasus Bay Family

Main Divide not only produces Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, but also Bordeaux-blend red wines, which are rare in the South Island. All of the wines are fruity yet have a rich, complex flavor.

Southern Alps

"Main Divide" is the nickname for the Southern Alps, a mountain range that runs through New Zealand's South Island. The name embodies the idea that the wines reflect the cool, pure climate of the South Island and express the individuality of each region and variety.

About the Canterbury/Waipara region

Canterbury/Waipara is located on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island and is characterized by a cool, dry climate.

North Canterbury, which is the country's largest plain, is also one of the world's leading lamb-producing regions, and the wineries scattered throughout the region offer a wide variety of wines.

Waipara, which can be reached on a day trip from Christchurch, produces premium wines such as Riesling and Pinot Noir and is a popular tourist destination.
