A hearty Sauvignon
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is characterised by distinct aromas of citrus and tropical fruits, as well as notes of herbs and cut grass.
The overall image is one of strong fruit flavors and a refreshing herbal sensation.
It is said that Sauvignon Blanc produced in New Zealand has a completely different character from that of wines from other countries.
However, to be precise, this unique character is not something that is "Made in New Zealand" but rather something that is "Made in Marlborough, New Zealand".
In Marlborough, the largest producing region, many Sauvignon Blanc wines have the characteristics described above, but other regions also produce Sauvignon Blanc wines that do not necessarily fit into that category.
The Sauvignon Blanc we are introducing this time, "Main Divide," is from North Canterbury, which goes a little outside of that category.
North Canterbury is located on the same South Island as Marlborough, but is cooler and drier than the latter.
When you taste them, the difference is clear.
If we classify Marlborough based on its distinctive features...
- Marlborough-like citrus and tropical fruit aromas are also present in this wine.
- Herbal and cut glass notes reminiscent of Marlborough wines are also present in this wine.
- Refreshing and cool feeling
→ This is clearly different.
This is the impression I got.
Main Divide Sauvignon Blanc is not exactly refreshing, but rather has a dense, full-bodied flavor.
When you put it in your mouth, the first thing that hits you is the citrus flavor of lime with a clean acidity and a slightly bitter taste like orange peel.
Afterwards, a herbal scent reminiscent of thyme wafts through your nose, while leaving behind a sticky, oily impression.
Unlike the image of Marlborough white wines being relatively light and easy to drink, this is a type of white wine with a full body, a long lingering finish, and a sense of volume in every sip.
I also think it's appropriate to say that the wine has a low center of gravity .
As for food that goes well with it, it would go better with heavy dishes such as fish, chicken, or pork rather than light appetizers.
It goes especially well with seafood and oil dishes such as shrimp ajillo and vongole bianco.
It also goes well with chicken cutlet, sauteed pork, and sausages.
Be sure to try it as an accompaniment to a hearty main dish.
About the Winery "Main Divide"
Main Divide is the second brand of Pegasus Bay, one of Canterbury's most prestigious wineries.
The wine is brewed by the team at Pegasus Bay using grapes sourced from growers across the Waipara Valley and their own grapes.
Main Divide not only produces Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, but also Bordeaux blend red wines, which are rare in the South Island. All of the wines are fruity yet have a complex flavor.
"Main Divide" is the nickname for the Southern Alps, a mountain range that runs through New Zealand's South Island. The name is intended to convey the meaning behind the wines, which reflect the cool and pure climate of the South Island and express the individuality of each region and variety.
About the Canterbury/Waipara region
Canterbury/Waipara is located on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island and is characterized by a cool, dry climate.
North Canterbury, which covers the country's largest plain, is also one of the world's leading lamb-producing regions, and the wineries scattered throughout the region offer a wide variety of wines.
Waipara, which can be reached from Christchurch on a day trip, produces premium wines such as Riesling and Pinot Noir and is a popular tourist destination.
