Main Divide is the second line of Pegasus Bay , a prestigious Canterbury whisky maker. However, even though it's a second line, the quality is still as good as the prestigious brand.

This Pinot Gris aims to combine the traditional style of Alsace, France, with a touch of North Canterbury character.

Slightly sweet, but not cloyingly sweet . A refined white wine with a rich fruitiness, crafted with an exquisite balance.

Cultivation and brewing

This Pinot Gris is grown in several contracted vineyards, all of which have well-drained gravelly alluvial soils, reflecting the somewhat poor soil conditions unique to North Canterbury, at the foot of the Southern Alps.

The harvested fruit is gently pressed and fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks, followed by a short period of sur lie aging to preserve the pure character of the varietals.

Tasting

When poured into a glass, it's not flashy at all, but it has a gentle aroma reminiscent of chamomile and orange blossom .

On the palate, there are strong hints of ripe tropical fruits like white peach and guava . There's a slight acidity, and the soft sweetness reminiscent of honey lingers for a long time. The center of gravity is somewhat low. The balance, with its firm weight of fruit, is perhaps characteristic of North Canterbury.

When chilled, it feels dry, making it a perfect accompaniment to meals. When heated a little, a pleasant sweetness emerges, making it perfect for enjoying on its own after a meal.

Pairing

It pairs well with dishes that have a hint of spice. Recommended dishes are...

• Shrimp and avocado spring rolls (sweet chili sauce)
• Pear and prosciutto salad
• Grilled scallops and white leeks (yuzu pepper flavor)

In both cases, a dash of white pepper will complement the wine's herbal notes.
