Rich in oak, bursting with fruit

This Chardonnay is a label I (Sommelier Iwasu) have recently been serving by the glass at my restaurant, "BOKU-MO," where it has been very well received.
By the way, when it comes to Chardonnay in New Zealand, it often feels somewhat overshadowed by the overwhelming presence of Sauvignon Blanc.
In fact, if you look at New Zealand's total wine production by variety, Chardonnay accounts for less than 5%.
However, Chardonnay boasts outstanding name recognition and popularity as an international variety. Even in New Zealand, there are producers in various regions adopting advanced techniques to create Chardonnays that rival those of Europe.
Among them, this wine from North Canterbury / Waipara truly reflects "remarkable experience and skill."
It is the Chardonnay from "Main Divide," the second label of the prestigious "Pegasus Bay."
The primary white variety for Pegasus Bay / Main Divide is Riesling. However, tasting this wine makes it clear that they have not cut any corners with their Chardonnay.
If anything, rather than the fruit-forward style common in New Zealand, it leaves the impression of being well-rounded, incorporating various other elements.
When poured into a glass, the first aromas that rise up are the fresh scents of plum, pear, and citrus. These are then joined by the toasted, oak-derived nuances of almond and brioche.
Deep down, there is a mineral character reminiscent of limestone or damp stone, which tightens the structure of the palate.
The body is thick, yet it maintains a sense of freshness thanks to its supple acidity. The finish is rich in minerals, with the scent of roasted almonds lingering after the swallow.
I believe this wine is a finished product where "fruit" and "non-fruit elements" coexist in an excellent, firm balance.
The ideal serving temperature is around 12°C. Be careful, as the aromas will retreat if it is served too cold.
- Chicken cream stew
- Avocado and grapefruit salad
- Scallop and zucchini carpaccio
- Butter-sautéed sea bream (with dill)
- Pork shabu-shabu and lemon hot pot
These types of dishes pair well with it.
It is an especially exceptional match for chicken cream stew. The mellowness of the wine matches the creaminess of the dish, allowing the fruit flavor within the wine to feel vibrant.
Give it a try!
About the Winery "Main Divide"

Main Divide is the second brand from the prestigious Canterbury winery, "Pegasus Bay."
The wine is crafted by the Pegasus Bay team using grapes sourced from various growers across the Waipara Valley, along with their own estate-grown grapes.

Main Divide is characterized not only by its Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir but also by its production of Bordeaux-blend red wines, which are rare in the South Island. Every wine is crafted to be both fruity and possess solid complexity.

"Main Divide" is the nickname for the "Southern Alps," the mountain range that runs the length of New Zealand's South Island. The name reflects the cool, pure climate of the South Island, embodying the intention to create wines that express the unique personality of each region and variety.
About the Canterbury/Waipara Region
"Canterbury/Waipara" is located on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island and is characterized by a cool, dry climate.
North Canterbury, home to the country's largest plains, is also one of the world's leading lamb-producing regions, where a variety of wines can be enjoyed at scattered boutique wineries.
In "Waipara," which can be visited as a day trip from Christchurch, premium wines such as Riesling and Pinot Noir are produced, and it is also popular as a tourist destination.
