Albariño is back!
Albariño is a grape variety grown in the coastal regions of Spain and Portugal.
The resulting wine is characterized by its freshness and minerality, with a slightly salty taste. For this reason, it is also called "sea wine," and you can enjoy its unique flavor reminiscent of the sea breeze.
In 2022, Kimura Cellars' first Albariño was a limited edition wine that quickly sold out. Its wonderful flavor has created many fans.
In response to these high expectations, a new vintage of Albariño has been released for the first time in two years, and the flavor has evolved even further.
Nelson, a grape-producing region, is a port city located at the northernmost tip of New Zealand's South Island.
The grapes that Kimura purchases directly from a trusted farmer are grown in fields on clay soil covered with a layer of gravel, and the vines are 12 years old.
After harvesting, the grapes are carefully pressed and fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks to maximize the fresh, vibrant aromas.
Now let's start tasting.
The first scent you notice is an elegant floral scent like jasmine , followed by the sweet and rich aroma of citrus and tropical fruits .
One bite and you'll be surprised at how rich it is.
The fruity flavor reminiscent of quince or compote pear spreads across your palate, adding a refreshing touch of mint-like herbs .
In addition, it has a slightly bitter citrus pulp and a gentle sweetness like honey , giving it an overall rounded texture .
The aftertaste has a moderate minerality and saltiness , maintaining a pleasant balance.
The alcohol content is slightly high at 14%.
The previous Kimura Cellars Albariño was rather easy to drink, but this one is a more profound wine that can be enjoyed slowly, pairing it with food.
Considering that Albariño is the "wine of the sea," it is best to pair it with seafood.
This is a wine with a somewhat heavy flavor, so it goes well with dishes that have a strong oily and salty flavor.
for example
- Octopus and sea bass carpaccio (with plenty of olive oil and rock salt)
- Sardine escabeche
- Steamed mussels in white wine (with oil sauce)
- Deep-fried broad beans and shrimp
- Shrimp and Shiitake Mushroom Fritters
Pairing it with food like this really brings out the wine's complex flavors.
In addition, because it has a strong flavor and body, it is resistant to oxidation and can be enjoyed for three days after opening.
About the Winery "Kimura Cellars"
KIMURA CELLARS is a family-run winery run by Japanese owner Shigehisa Kimura.
Kimura studied wine brewing and viticulture in New Zealand and gained experience working in cultivation and brewing at several local wineries before founding Kimura Cellars in Marlborough in 2009.
Based on the concepts of "wine where you can see the face of the maker" and "producers who are close to consumers," we carefully create wine using organic farming methods.
In 2018, they finally started growing grapes in their own fields, and are now focusing even more on organic farming methods.
The Kimura Cellars logo is a cherry blossom representation of the new shoots of the fern (koru), a symbolic plant of New Zealand. The fern is a symbol of New Zealand and represents "new beginnings," "growth," and "harmony."
It seems that Kimura's wines are often enjoyed on special occasions such as wedding anniversaries.
About Nelson
Nelson is located in the northern part of the South Island and is affectionately known as "Sunny Nelson" due to the extremely long hours of sunshine throughout the year.
This relatively small wine region is mostly made up of small wineries known as boutique wineries.
Taking advantage of the abundant sunshine, aromatic white wines such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Gris are mainly produced. Pinot Noir, which has a strong fruity flavor, is popular for red wine. Nelson is also famous for producing hops and fruits.
