From the southernmost production area

Central Otago is known as the "southernmost wine-producing region in the world," located at around 45 degrees south latitude (45 degrees north in Japan is around Cape Soya in Hokkaido).

It may be a bit of an exaggeration to say that it is "close to Antarctica," but when you actually go there, you can feel that it is a cool growing region, as the nights are surprisingly cool even in summer.

A production area with scattered subregions

Central Otago is a wine-producing region that is not densely populated with wineries, but is made up of a number of small subregions. Alexandra , located at the southernmost point of the region, is a quiet town with a population of about 6,000.

Judge Rock is a producer based in this "southernmost region of the world's southernmost wine-producing area" and has been cultivating grapes there since 1998.

Southernmost doesn't mean coldest

It may be surprising, but Alexandra is not "extremely cold just because it's in the south."

  • Highest temperature in summer (January): 35°C
  • Lowest temperature in winter (July): -12°C

The entire city is located in a basin, and has a "basin climate" where the temperature rises sharply during the day in summer and drops sharply in winter.

This is why Pinot Noir from Central Otago, including Alexandra, is recognised on a global level.

  • There is a lot of sunshine,
  • The extreme temperature difference between day and night makes the skin thick and allows the pigment (anthocyanin) to be firmly contained .

For this reason, it is said that Pinots with a slightly darker color are more likely to be produced.

Judge Rock Pinot Noir 2017

When poured into a glass, it has a slightly darker color with a hint of brick on the edges, showing its maturity.

However, the aroma and flavor are surprisingly predominantly red.

  • raspberry
  • pomegranate
  • Clean acid
  • A high-quality clove-like spice that follows

It's not as rich as the color suggests, and while the fruit is firm at the core, the style is supple and gentle. It also has a matured, mature feel, and the overall image is of a "cool Pinot Noir."

The alcohol content is 12.6%. It is a smooth Otago Pinot with a pleasant balance of red and black fruits and spice.

Pairing

The balance of fruit and spice is perfect, so it pairs well with light meat dishes and red fish. For example...

  • Chicken and mushroom stewed in tomato sauce
  • Pork shabu-shabu (soy sauce-based sauce)
  • Tuna carpaccio
  • Yellowtail teriyaki

Please use this as a reference for pairing.

Cultivation and brewing

The vineyard covers an area of 4 hectares and is planted with 12,500 Pinot Noir vines of four different clones.

90-95% destemmed, 5-10% whole bunch. Fermented with wild yeast, aged for 10-11 months. 1/3 new oak. Lightly clarified before bottling.

About the Winery "Judge Rock"

Judge Rock is a small family-owned winery run by the Jacobson-Ciaroni family.

Their motto is "elegant, sensual and intimate," and they aim to create wines that are balanced rather than powerful, familial rather than corporate, and like "romance rather than a blockbuster movie."

They describe themselves as "the Higgs of the world's Pinot Noir," humorously pointing out that although they may be small in size, their existence and numerous awards demonstrate their high quality.

history

Located on the hidden slopes of the Alexandra Basin, the 4-hectare vineyard was first planted in 1998 by Paul's father, John Patrick Joseph Jacobson, and is currently home to 12,500 Pinot Noir and 2,500 Saint-Laurent vines.

The region has an extreme climate, with temperatures ranging from minus 12 degrees Celsius in winter to 35 degrees Celsius in summer, but the cool nights help preserve the freshness and elegant aromas of the grapes.

Since 2019, the farm has been certified organic, and its cultivation is carried out with consideration for the natural environment.

Attention to detail

Their winemaking is meticulous and entirely handcrafted: grapes are hand-picked, fermented with wild yeasts, cold-soaked in stainless steel tanks, and then aged in French oak barrels (both new and used).

The winemaking team is made up of experienced New Zealand winemakers, and owner Paul himself oversees winemaking, drawing on his experience working at Benjamin Leroux in Burgundy.

Unique and Award-Winning Wines

The high quality of Judge Rock's wines has led to them winning numerous gold medals and trophies at national and international competitions, including the Decanter World Wine Awards and the Air New Zealand Wine Awards.

Of particular note are the unique product names that include legal terms.

The wines are characterized by playful names such as "Guilty" (Pet Nat), "The Verdict" (Port), "The Alibi" (Blanc de Noirs), "Your Honour" (Pinot Noir), and "Innocent" (Rose).

They also produce Saint Laurent, a rare variety in New Zealand.

Hospitality

The winery has a cellar door attached to it that is open every day (11am - 5pm). They also have a stall at the Otago Farmers Market in Dunedin every Saturday morning, positioning it as a "cellar door to the world."

Additionally, the vineyard is home to Judge Rock Cottage, a self-catering accommodation offering a relaxing stay with spectacular Central Otago views, starry skies and award-winning wines.

While humbly admitting that "we are so small that we are almost invisible to the world," they continue to express the Central Otago terroir with their passion and the assured quality evidenced by numerous awards.

This is a wonderful winery with a strong love and commitment to wine.

About Central Otago

Central Otago, the southernmost region in the country, is known as a famous producer of Pinot Noir and is known as one of the world's three major Pinot Noir producing regions, along with Burgundy and Oregon.

In addition to Pinot Noir, the region is also focusing on the cultivation of aromatic white grapes. This region is the only one of New Zealand's wine-producing regions with a semi-continental climate, characterized by large daily temperature differences, coolness, and extreme dryness.

The region is also home to a treasure trove of small wineries, and winery tours based in the scenic town of Queenstown are popular.
