The vineyards are on very steep slopes and the wine is aged in underground caves, giving this winery a unique character that sets it apart from other New Zealand wineries. This rosé is very fruity yet dry.

This elegant dry rosé pairs well with seafood, such as seafood salad, vongole (either bianco or rosso), or bouillabaisse.

About the Johanneshof Cellars Winery

johanneshof_logo

Johanneshof Cellars is a boutique winery located in the Marlborough region of New Zealand's South Island, and was founded in 1991. The founders are Warwick Foley, a local New Zealander, and Edel Eberling, a German. The two studied oenology at Geisenheim University in Germany, and used their respective expertise to start the winery.

One of the winery's greatest features is its underground rock cellar, New Zealand's first, which was completed in 1993. This 50-metre-long cellar, approximately 20 metres below ground level, maintains a stable temperature and humidity throughout the year, providing an ideal environment for wine aging.

Since its founding, the winery has produced high-quality aromatic white wines and sparkling wines with traditional bottle-fermentation, earning international acclaim. In 2005, the winery's Gewürztraminer was selected as the "World's Best Aromatic White Wine" at the Decanter World Wine Awards, proving the high quality of its wines.

Johanneshof Cellars Winemaking

Johanneshof Cellars believes in blending European tradition with New Zealand innovation, combining Old World winemaking techniques with New World innovation to create distinctive, high-quality wines.

This philosophy is also reflected in each step of the winemaking process. For example, all grapes are hand-picked and vinified with minimal intervention. Furthermore, sparkling wines are fermented in the Champagne method (secondary fermentation in the bottle), and the aging process involves using traditional wooden racks, carefully removing the sediment by manually moving each bottle. Furthermore, the winery itself is designed with a multi-layered structure that utilizes gravity, minimizing stress on the wine by avoiding excessive stirring by pumps.

Founder Warwick Foley believes that "great wine is the result of great effort, and greatness is not something that is given to you, but something that you earn," and practices artisanal winemaking that combines tradition and innovation.

Environmental and Sustainability Initiatives

They place great importance on environmental conservation and sustainability in every step of the winemaking process, and are certified by New Zealand's Sustainable Winegrowing Standards to ensure that their grape growing and winemaking practices are environmentally friendly.

The winery's underground rock cellars utilize a naturally constant temperature environment, providing optimal conditions for wine aging while reducing the need for artificial cooling energy. The vineyards are also managed with minimal chemical intervention, striving to maintain soil health and ecosystems.

Johanneshof Cellars is not just a wine producer, but one whose mission is to produce high-quality wines in harmony with the local nature. We continue to practice sustainable winemaking, based on the philosophy of "pursuing balanced, high-quality wines while caring for the land and environment in a regenerative way."

About Marlborough

Marlborough is the heart of New Zealand's wine region.

Marlborough has ideal natural conditions for grape growing, such as abundant sunshine and large temperature differences throughout the day, and produces over 80% of New Zealand's wine.

Among them, Sauvignon Blanc, characterized by its crisp acidity and overflowing fruitiness, boasts an overwhelming production volume and is loved worldwide for its unique character. In red wine, Pinot Noir, with its rich berry fruit flavor, is also popular.
