Located in the huge wine-producing region of Marlborough, this boutique winery sticks to handmade production. This Gewurz is a unique white wine with a very exotic aroma and a strong sense of grape concentration.

Chinese and Thai food are great. If it's a little spicy, that's even better. It goes well with spicy curry.

About the winery "Johanneshof Cellars"

johanneshof_logo

Johannshof Cellars is a boutique winery located in the Marlborough region of New Zealand's South Island, and was established in 1991. The founders are Warwick Foley, a local New Zealander, and Edel Eberling, a German. The two studied oenology at Geisenheim University in Germany, and used their respective expertise to launch the winery.

One of the major features of this winery is New Zealand's first underground rock cellar, which was completed in 1993. This cellar, 50 metres long and approximately 20 metres below the surface, maintains a stable temperature and humidity throughout the year, providing an ideal environment for wine aging.

Since its establishment, the winery has produced high-quality aromatic white wines and sparkling wines with traditional bottle fermentation, which have been highly acclaimed internationally. In 2005, the winery's Gewürztraminer was selected as the "World's Best Aromatic White Wine" at the Decanter World Wine Awards, proving the high quality of the winery's wines.

Winemaking at Johanneshof Cellars

Johanneshof Cellars believes in blending European tradition with New Zealand innovation, combining Old World winemaking techniques with New World innovation to create distinctive, high quality wines.

This philosophy is also reflected in each step of the winemaking process. For example, all grapes are hand-picked and vinified with minimal intervention. Sparkling wines are produced using the Champagne method (secondary fermentation in the bottle), and the aging process involves using traditional wooden racks to carefully remove the sediment while moving each bottle by hand. In addition, the winery itself is designed with a multi-layered structure that utilizes gravity, minimizing stress on the wine by avoiding excessive stirring by pumps.

Founder Warrick Foley believes that "great wine is the result of great effort, and that greatness is not something that is given to you, but something that you earn," and practices artisanal winemaking that combines tradition and innovation.

Environmental and Sustainability Initiatives

They place great importance on environmental conservation and sustainability in every step of the winemaking process, and are certified by New Zealand's Sustainable Winegrowing Standards to practice environmentally friendly grape growing and winemaking practices.

The winery's underground rock cellars provide optimal conditions for wine aging by utilizing a natural constant temperature environment, while reducing the use of artificial cooling energy. In addition, chemical intervention is kept to a minimum in vineyard management, striving to maintain soil health and ecosystems.

Johanneshof Cellars is not just a wine producer, but a company whose mission is to produce high-quality wines in harmony with the local nature. We continue to practice sustainable winemaking based on the philosophy of "pursuing balanced, high-quality wines while caring for the land and environment in a regenerative way."

About Marlborough

Marlborough is the heart of New Zealand's wine region.

Marlborough has ideal natural conditions for grape growing, such as abundant sunshine and large temperature differences throughout the day, and more than 80% of New Zealand's wine is produced there.

Among them, Sauvignon Blanc, characterized by its crisp acidity and overflowing fruitiness, is produced in overwhelming quantities and is loved worldwide for its unique character. In addition, Pinot Noir, with its rich berry fruit flavor, is also popular among red wines.
