Mellow, rich and concentrated Chardonnay

The aroma of the barrel is strong

This Chardonnay has a different feel from the moment you put it in your mouth. It doesn't have the same fruitiness as other NZ Chardonnays.

Instead, what emerges is a smooth texture like butterscotch, with hints of roasted nuts and flint, and hints of ripe white peach and nectarine fruit.

This is a wine with a modest and calm tone, and a strong sense of concentration.

Old vines and wild yeast are the key

The Chardonnay vines, over 30 years old, are the oldest plots at Isabel Estate.

The vineyards are densely planted, producing a small but concentrated harvest every year. The grapes are hand-picked in the morning and gently pressed by the bunch in the afternoon. The wine is naturally fermented and aged for one year in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new, and then aged for an additional five months before bottling.

Only wild yeast is used. Natural fermentation and a long sur lie period give the wine its roundness and depth.

A comfortable, rich feeling that leaves you feeling relaxed and satisfied every time you drink it.
"It has a strong, powerful and complex flavor."
That's Chardonnay.

Aroma and flavour: Layers of butter, flint and white peach

The butterscotch-like aroma is layered with delicate citrus and white peach, and after swallowing, the aroma of flint, toast, nuts, and grains quietly drifts. The taste is rich yet restrained, with smooth acidity leading to a long-lasting aftertaste.

Recommended pairing

  • Sauteed flounder in butter

The mellowness of the wine and the delicate sweetness of the fish blend together pleasantly.

  • Smoked salmon risotto

The smoky and rich flavor of the rice goes well with the oak aroma.

  • Chicken fricassee (cream stew)

The acidity of the wine balances the creaminess of the dish and keeps it from feeling heavy.

  • Carbonara

The delicious flavor of bacon and the richness of eggs blend with the structure of Chardonnay for a perfect combination.

  • White cheese (Brie, Camembert, etc.)

The perfect marriage of the roundness of the wine and the creaminess of the cheese.

This is a great choice for a relaxed weekend meal. Take your time to enjoy the aroma. It will be even more enjoyable if you raise the temperature a little. The aftertaste of this Chardonnay is sure to be memorable.

About the Winery "Isabel Estate Vineyards"

Isabel Estate is a winery located in the Wairau Valley in the Marlborough region of New Zealand's South Island. The cool climate with long hours of sunshine and large temperature differences between day and night helps to grow grapes with excellent acidity and aroma. The well-drained gravelly soil mixed with clay provides an ideal environment for producing wines with both concentrated fruitiness and complexity.

Background of the Company's Establishment

Isabel Estate began in 1980. Founder Mike Tiller was a former pilot who spotted this land from the air while flying. Attracted by the ideal topography and climate, he and his wife Robin started growing grapes. The winery was named after Mike's mother, Isabel. In 1994, they released their first vintage under their own brand, and began to take full-scale steps as a winery that prioritizes quality.

Winemaking philosophy

Isabel Estate believes in "wine that reflects the field" and is committed to growing grapes and brewing 100% in their own fields. The high density planting and yield restrictions, which are rare even in Marlborough, allow the fruit flavor to be concentrated, and this is supported by delicate brewing that makes use of natural yeast and French oak. Isabel's style is to make wine that brings out the individuality of the land and the variety without making any unnecessary changes.

People and teams

Currently, winemaking is led by Jeremy Mackenzie, a winemaker from Marlborough. Using his experience working at a famous winery overseas, he is working on winemaking that is in tune with the local terroir. His Chardonnay has been highly praised both in New Zealand and overseas, and in recent years he has won the country's Best Winemaker Award.

Quietly but surely, a skill that is highly valued

Isabel Estate's wines are not flashy, but rather captivate drinkers with their depth of flavor and elegant structure. In particular, their Chardonnay has won the highest award in national awards for multiple vintages, and is recognized as one of Marlborough's leading wineries with a quiet presence and solid ability.

About Marlborough

Marlborough is the heart of New Zealand's wine region.

Marlborough has ideal natural conditions for grape growing, such as abundant sunshine and large temperature differences throughout the day, and more than 80% of New Zealand's wine is produced there.

Among them, Sauvignon Blanc, characterized by its crisp acidity and overflowing fruitiness, is produced in overwhelming quantities and is loved worldwide for its unique character. In addition, Pinot Noir, with its rich berry fruit flavor, is also popular among red wines.
